Programming a Cartesian gantry robot for stochastic work cycles

Industrial robot programming languages were historically created for repetitive work cycles: a fixed sequence of movements performed on identical objects at deterministic intervals. The emergence of laboratory automation in agricultural biotechnology sets a fundamentally different mode of operation - a stochastic work cycle, in which the identity of the target, the order of operations, and the start time are determined during execution, not during programming. This paper formalizes this distinction and derives eight requirements for a programming language necessary for native support of stochastic cycles. A documentary analysis of the coverage of these requirements by the programming language of the Iskra-103L controller, used in the GRINIK AS-1000 stacker robot deployed in the Sady Chechni laboratory, was performed using seventeen documented language primitives as a closed analytical surface. The analysis identified five requirements that are only partially covered or not covered at all, and an architectural pattern - a supervisory layer over the native robot language - that compensates for these gaps without modifying the proprietary controller.
