This article examines he socio-cultural specifics of ethnic communities with an emphasis on the mentality of the peoples of the Caucasus in the context of historical, cultural, natural and geographical factors. The main theoretical approaches to the concept of mentality, including primordialism, constructivism and a sociobiological approach, are analyzed, and the interdisciplinary nature of the issues under study is emphasized. Special attention is paid to the influence of the natural environment on the formation of ethnic identity and social structures, as well as the relationship between traditional norms, legal awareness and collective self-identification. It is noted that the natural conditions, in particular the mountainous landscape, significantly affected the social stratification and economic dependence of the highlanders on the lowland population, which has the best resources for agricultural activities. Despite the fact that in modern conditions such dependence is rather symbolic in nature, its cultural heritage continues to influence social attitudes. The features of ethnic consolidation, legal ambivalence, ethnogenetic connections and cultural codes of the peoples of the North Caucasus are highlighted. The conclusion is made about the importance of the natural landscape, interethnic interactions and historical memory in the formation of stable mental attitudes and socio-cultural patterns of behavior.
