Adaptive learning and competency development in a digital society

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming education, enabling the creation of adaptive and personalized learning environments that respond in real time to students’ individual needs. The integration of AI into pedagogical practices supports the development of competencies, lifelong learning, and the strengthening of metacognitive skills. Adaptive systems use data analysis to track progress, identify knowledge gaps, and recommend personalized interventions, allowing educators to focus on higher-level pedagogical tasks. AI also promotes the development of 21st-century skills, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and digital literacy. Students become active participants in their own learning process, developing their self-regulatory and reflective abilities. The use of AI represents a paradigm shift from content-centered education toward competency development, in line with societal and labor market needs. For educators, the use of AI requires technological-pedagogical competencies and data literacy, as well as adherence to the principles of ethical and responsible use. Frameworks such as TPACK (Koehler et al. 2013) help align tools, subject-matter knowledge, and pedagogical methods. However, the integration of AI also presents challenges, as addressing algorithmic biases, data privacy, infrastructure costs, and digital inequalities is crucial to maintaining social justice. Overall, AI in education is not merely a technological innovation but a tool for creating personalized, effective, and inclusive learning environments, preparing students and educators for the digital challenges of the 21st century.
