Evaluative Language and Ideological Meaning in Poetry for Children: An Analytical Perspective
Poetry for children is often considered simple and entertaining, yet it is quite significant in influencing the emotional, moral, and ideological development of young readers. This research explores the utilization of evaluative language in English poetry for children in the perspective Appraisal Theory. The qualitative analysis of the poems selected from Pakistani school textbooks (Grades 6-8) illustrates how the subsystems of attitude, engagement, and graduation encode emotional reactions, moral evaluations, and ideological stances. The results exhibit that poetry for children ensures promotion of moral lessons, regulation of emotions, presentation of an idealized childhood, and cultivation of ethics. In essence, these ideologies are built mainly through monoglossic positioning that considers them as natural and unquestionable. The research reveals that poetry for children is not only an artistic medium but also pedagogical and ideological instrument that engages young readers with dominant moral and cultural aspects.
