Major Investment Projects: Paraná Coast going on the wrong way to sustainable development

Abstract The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are considered a master plan to globally address environmental challenges, and 193 countries worldwide have committed to them. In Brazil, there has been little effort to assess SDGs agenda achievement, and the influence Major Investment Projects (MIPs) may have on SDGs has not been studied yet. This paper analyzes the influence MIPs have on SDGs achievement in Paraná Coast, southern Brazil. A secondary data analysis was conducted to obtain an up-to-date overview of MIPs either under the licensing process or in the planning stage. From the list of 23 MIPs, seven were chosen to perform a quali-quantitative analysis of impacts on SDGs. It resulted in a list of 24 positive and 117 negative impacts showing that MIPs would intensify public services problems, cause loss of biodiversity, and interfere with artisanal fishery and tourism, risking the achievement of SDGs until 2030.
