Hakikat dan Sejarah Perkembangan Bahasa Indonesia
The national language for a postcolonial state is not merely an instrument of administrative communication, but rather an ideological project that cements national identity amidst ethnolinguistic plurality. This study aims to analyze the nature of Indonesian as a system of symbols and collective identity, reconstruct its historical dynamics from the Old Malay era to its unification as a language, and explore contemporary sociolinguistic challenges in the era of globalization and digitalization. Using a qualitative approach through library research, this article integrates historical analysis with philosophical-conceptual studies to dissect various language policy documents and related literature. The results show that the transformation of Malay into Indonesian is a manifestation of the success of egalitarian and inclusive sociolinguistic engineering. The post-independence standardization process through corpus codification (such as PUEBI/EYD) and the affirmation of the linguistic market has proven effective in building national integration. However, in the contemporary era, the hegemony of this standard language faces the challenge of linguistic hybridity due to the rise of code-switching and informal digital language variations on social media. This study concludes that strengthening the identity of the Indonesian language in the future requires a policy reorientation: shifting from a rigid top-down grammatical model to a bottom-up approach that adapts to modern linguistic ecology without sacrificing its function as a unifying force for the nation.
