This article presents an exposition and analysis of the Trinity as understood by the contemporary Lutheran theologian E. Jüngel. Jüngel’s treatment of the Trinity was a response to the “death of God theologies” that emerged in the 20th century, represented by T. Altizer and G. Vattimo, who proposed modernizing Christianity along paths that departed from traditional Christianity. Taking seriously Heidegger’s interpretation of the crisis of modern theology as a consequence of a metaphysical conception of God, Jüngel sees a way out of the crisis within the framework of traditional Christian theology: a clarification of the church’s doctrine of the Trinity, which posits its source in the Divine Revelation in Jesus Christ. Drawing on Holy Scripture, Luther’s concept of theopaschism, and Karl Rahner’s concept of the unity of the immanent and iconic Trinity, and attributing the central events of Divine Revelation to the death of Jesus Christ on the Cross, Jüngel convincingly develops the concept of the Trinity as a “unity of mutual otherness for the sake of life,” the essence of which is love. The Trinity is capable of embracing death, but without submitting to it, transforming it into life. The article also examines the soteriological and eschatological aspects of Jüngel’s justification of the Christian Trinity. The result is a deeper understanding of Lutheran ideas such as salvation by faith, theology of the Word of God, the unity of Law and Gospel, and Jüngel’s understanding of God’s being as “being in becoming.
