Composable Frontend Architecture: Microfrontends and Independent Deployment for Scalable Enterprise Digital Platforms

The increasing complexity of enterprise web applications creates challenges related to frontend scalability, development coordination, deployment coupling, maintainability, and performance. Conventional monolithic frontend architectures require multiple teams to coordinate changes through shared codebases and centralized deployment pipelines, limiting release agility. Microfrontend architecture addresses these challenges by decomposing frontend applications into independently developed and deployed modules aligned with business capabilities. However, uncontrolled decomposition can introduce additional network overhead, duplicate dependencies, increased runtime integration complexity, and inconsistent user experiences. This paper presents a Performance-Aware Composable Microfrontend Architecture (PACMA) that integrates domain-oriented decomposition, independent deployment, runtime composition, contract-based integration, shared design systems, performance optimization, and observability. A comparative evaluation was conducted using equivalent monolithic and composable frontend application scenarios. The evaluation indicates reductions in average build time from 8.6 to 3.1 minutes and deployment time from 12.4 to 4.7 minutes. Initial JavaScript transfer decreased from 1.82 MB to 1.54 MB, while Largest Contentful Paint improved from 2.48 to 2.31 seconds. Independent release capability increased to 83.3% of evaluated changes. The findings suggest that a performance-aware, composable frontend architecture can improve organizational scalability and deployment independence while maintaining acceptable application performance, provided appropriate optimization and governance mechanisms are in place.
