DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES AS A TOOL TO ENHANCE OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY IN THE MARITIME INDUSTRY
As the global economy undergoes rapid digital transformation, the maritime industry is increasingly shaped by the integration of advanced digital technologies. Shipping companies are no longer adopting digital tools solely for efficiency gains; instead, these technologies are becoming essential for ensuring transparency, resilience, and long-term competitiveness. Against this backdrop, the study explores how digitalization is reshaping the operational and strategic landscape of the shipping sector.The article focuses on several key technological directions that are currently driving change in the industry. Among them are the use of the Internet of Things (IoT) for real-time vessel monitoring, blockchain-based solutions for improving the reliability and transparency of logistics and documentation processes, and the gradual shift toward automation and autonomous shipping. At the same time, digital transformation is not viewed as a purely technological process, as it inevitably introduces organizational, regulatory, and managerial challenges.Particular emphasis is placed on cybersecurity, which has become a critical concern in highly digitalized maritime systems. The growing reliance on interconnected technologies increases exposure to cyber risks, making the protection of data and infrastructure a strategic priority. The paper highlights that addressing these challenges requires not only technical solutions but also the development of appropriate regulatory frameworks and coordinated policy responses.The findings suggest that the evolution of digital technologies in shipping is closely aligned with the broader paradigm of Industry 4.0, characterized by the integration of cyber-physical systems, big data, and intelligent automation.
