Analysis of Cargo Monitoring System (CMS) Failure in the Cargo Control Room on MT. Musi

This study aims to analyze the factors influencing the failure of the Cargo Monitoring System (CMS) in the cargo control room on board MT. Musi and to examine their impact on the effectiveness of cargo loading and unloading operations. The research addresses the critical issue of declining system reliability, which affects operational safety, monitoring accuracy, and efficiency. A qualitative research design was employed using a survey approach involving ship officers and crew directly engaged in cargo operations. Data were collected through structured questionnaires, supported by operational records and maintenance documentation, and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to identify significant relationships between variables. The results indicate that technical factors—particularly sensor degradation, electrical instability, and calibration inconsistencies—have a significant influence on CMS failure. In addition, human factors, including limited system understanding and non-compliance with standard operating procedures, as well as weaknesses in maintenance management, significantly contribute to the occurrence and severity of system disruptions. The findings also reveal that CMS failure has a statistically significant impact on decreasing monitoring accuracy, increasing workload, elevating safety risks, and reducing operational efficiency. In conclusion, this study confirms that CMS reliability is determined by the integration of technical performance, human competence, and maintenance management systems. The study contributes to the development of a reliability-centered maintenance approach and provides practical implications for improving maritime safety, optimizing maintenance policies, and enhancing crew competency in tanker operations.
