The Impact of Social Media on Narrative in Contemporary English Literature

The emergence of social media platforms over the past two decades has fundamentally altered not only how people communicate, but also how stories are told, received, and circulated. This paper examines the multifaceted impact of social media on narrative in contemporary English literature, exploring how digital platforms have reshaped narrative structure, language, style, and thematic concerns. Drawing on narrative theory, digital humanities scholarship, and media studies, the study traces the movement from linear, print-based storytelling toward fragmented, multimodal, and participatory narrative forms. It also investigates how new digital genres, such as Twitterature, Instapoetry, and platform-based fiction, have emerged as legitimate literary expressions that challenge traditional notions of authorship and literary value. The paper argues that while social media offers unprecedented opportunities for democratizing storytelling and expanding thematic horizons, it simultaneously raises serious questions about literary depth, algorithmic homogenization, and the commodification of creative expression. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach grounded in a critical review of relevant academic literature and concludes with recommendations for literary scholars, educators, and practitioners navigating the evolving digital landscape.
