Sustainable Practices of Multinational Construction Companies, Lagos, Nigeria

Abstract

This study evaluated the sustainable practices of multinational construction companies (MCCs) in Lagos State, Nigeria, with a view to promoting sustainable development and achieving a sustainable future. A total of 150 structured questionnaires were administered to selected multinational construction companies, yielding a response rate of 47%. The collected data were analysed using frequency distribution and mean score techniques to classify respondents’ perceptions of sustainability practices. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was employed to determine significant differences in respondents’ opinions, while factor analysis was used to identify the underlying factors influencing sustainable practices. The findings revealed a high level of engagement by multinational construction companies in sustainable practices, including corporate social responsibility and ethical practices, installation of energy-efficient mechanical and electrical systems, reduction in the use of hazardous materials on construction sites, minimization of construction waste, and energy conservation in company operations. The study further identified cost effectiveness and financial gains, stakeholders’ understanding, access to sustainable technologies, operational and economic considerations, and corporate image and value delivery as the most influential factors driving sustainability adoption. The study concluded that multinational construction companies in Lagos State are actively implementing practices that contribute to environmental sustainability and the well-being of future generations. However, financial and cost-related constraints remain significant barriers to the effective implementation of sustainable practices within the construction sector.

Factors Influencing the Adoption of Environmental Sustainability Practices in Selected Petroleum Industries in Southeastern Nigeria

This study examined the organisational and regulatory factors influencing the adoption of environmental sustainability practices in selected petroleum industries in Southeast Nigeria. The petroleum sector remains economically important, but its operations are associated with environmental concerns that require stronger sustainability responses. A cross-sectional survey research design and quantitative approach were adopted. Primary data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to employees and management personnel in selected oil and gas companies. A total of 420 questionnaires were distributed, 392 were retrieved, and 384 valid responses were used for analysis, representing a valid completion rate of 91.4%. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, including frequencies, percentages, mean scores and standard deviation, as well as multiple regression analysis. The findings showed high agreement with organisational factors, regulatory factors and environmental sustainability adoption, with mean scores of 4.23, 4.07 and 3.95, respectively. The regression results indicated that organisational factors had a significant positive effect on environmental sustainability adoption (β = 0.45, t = 9.62, p < 0.05). Regulatory factors also had a significant positive influence on adoption (β = 0.37, t = 7.88, p < 0.05). The model explained 58.0% of the variation in environmental sustainability adoption. The study concludes that internal organisational support and consistent regulatory oversight are important for improving sustainability practices in petroleum firms.

Evaluating the Role of Advanced Energy-Efficient Technologies in Promoting Sustainability in Nigeria's Construction Industry

This study evaluates the impact of advanced energy-efficient technologies on sustainability within the Nigerian construction sector, focusing on their effects on energy consumption, cost reduction, environmental benefits, and social impacts. A quantitative research approach was employed, using structured questionnaires administered to a total of 123 construction professionals across 150 infrastructure projects in Nigeria. The respondents included architects (n=30), civil and structural engineers (n=38), project managers (n=32), and other construction specialists such as quantity surveyors and support staff (n=23). The analysis included descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis to evaluate the relationships between technology adoption and sustainability outcomes. The results indicate strong consensus among respondents that energy-efficient technologies lead to reduced energy consumption (mean=4.2, SD=0.83) and long-term cost savings (mean=4.0, SD=0.92). Environmental benefits were rated highly (mean=4.3, SD=0.68), while social impacts were perceived as less significant (mean=3.7, SD=0.75). ANOVA results revealed statistically significant differences in perceptions based on professional roles (F(3,119)=5.24, p=0.002), with architects showing the strongest agreement regarding the effectiveness of these technologies. Multiple regression analysis identified perceived cost savings (β=0.34, p<0.001) and environmental impact (β=0.29, p<0.001) as the most influential predictors of technology adoption, followed by stakeholder awareness (β=0.22, p<0.001) and social benefits (β=0.15, p=0.003). The model accounted for 76% of the variance in adoption rates (R²=0.76), suggesting robust explanatory power. These findings highlight the critical role of advanced energy-efficient technologies in promoting sustainability in the Nigerian construction sector. They also emphasize the need for targeted educational programs and policy reforms to improve stakeholder awareness, especially of the social and community benefits, to drive broader and more inclusive adoption.

Fourth Industrial Revolution Technologies in the Nigerian Construction Industry: Professionals' Perceptions and Potential Benefits

Purpose: This study investigated 4IR technologies in the Nigerian construction sector to improve construction processes and outcomes. The specific objectives of the study are to determine the construction professionals’ perceptions on adoption of 4IR technologies in Nigeria. A survey research design was employed for this study in Lagos State. Design/Methodology/Approach: A convenience sampling technique was employed to select a sample of 80 respondents because there was no documented list of construction professionals (i.e., architects, builders, quantity surveyors, engineers, estate surveyors and valuers, and town planners) who use 4IR technologies. Questionnaires were administered to the respondents, and the data were analysed with frequency, percentage, standard deviation, mean, rank and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Research Limitation: The relatively modest sample size of 80 respondents, while adequate for exploratory analysis, may constrain the study's statistical power and limit the extent to which the findings can be extrapolated across regions, organisational contexts, or professional sub-groups within the Nigerian construction industry. Findings: The findings revealed a need for skilled workers and infrastructure readiness for the adoption of 4IR, while the topmost benefit of 4IR is the enhancement of project speed. Practical Implication: Adoption is likely to enhance operational efficiency, improve productivity, and strengthen the sector's capacity to respond to evolving industry demands and global competitiveness pressures. Social Implications: Investment in digital infrastructure could further consolidate this trajectory, enabling the sector to fully realise the transformative benefits of 4IR technologies, including improved quality outcomes, reduced inefficiencies, and enhanced sustainability practices. Originality / Value: This study contributes to the body of knowledge by establishing the construction industry's propensity to integrate 4IR and confirming the issues that could hinder its implementation, such as a shortage of skilled workers and basic infrastructure.

Benefits and Obstacles of Implementing Circularity by Construction Sector Companies in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship of Poland

The construction sector has a significant impact on natural resources consumption and waste generation. In accordance with circular economy principles, the adoption of secondary materials, encompassing both reused and recycled components, by construction companies is of increasing strategic importance, especially in cities and their surrounding areas. However, enterprises in this sector continue to face substantial challenges related to implementation of these materials. The article aims to investigate the opinions of representatives of companies operating in the construction sector in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship of Poland regarding the benefits and obstacles associated with the implementation of secondary materials, as well as to identify measures that could contribute to the wider use of these materials in practice. The study was conducted using a diagnostic survey method based on computer-assisted web interviews. The sample comprised 46 respondents from the West Pomeranian Voivodeship of Poland. The analysis of the collected opinions emphasized that waste reduction, protection of the environment and natural resources are perceived as the most significant benefits. Among the main obstacles to implement these materials, respondents highlighted the lack of specialized platforms for secondary materials trading, difficulties in materials sorting, including construction and demolition waste, as well as complex bureaucratic procedures. In the respondents’ opinion, the measures crucial for facilitating the use of secondary materials include the development of legislation enabling the reclassification of waste as secondary construction materials, ensuring reliable access to these materials, and providing government support. It was revealed that despite broad recognition of environmental benefits, the primary obstacle is the absence of an effective marketplace for secondary materials, pointing to a crucial role for institutional intervention. Recommendations for companies’ managers from the construction sector, designers and local policymakers were proposed.

Development of a sustainability index for determining sustainable building construction practices in developing countries: A case study of Uganda

The systematic evaluation of sustainable construction practices remains limited by the absence of adaptive, context-specific indices that integrate multidimensional stakeholder perspectives. This study developed a sustainability Index to quantify the relative contributions of environmental, economic, and social variables to sustainable construction practices in developing countries. A quantitative research design was employed, with data collected from 270 construction stakeholders, including contractors, consultants, academics, policymakers, and community representatives, through a structured questionnaire, in Uganda as the case study. The data were analyzed using the Relative Importance Index (RII) to rank sustainability attributes and construct the sustainability index, using the Variable Attribute Factor (VAF) approach based on the top-ranked factors. Environmental factors, notably energy efficiency, waste minimization, and resource conservation, exert the greatest influence, followed by economic factors such as sustainable procurement, cost management, and access to financing. Social factors, including stakeholder participation, health and safety, and equitable design, ranked third. The highest VAF Index values were recorded for Life Cycle Costing (7.4890), Stakeholder Identification and Participation (7.4514), and Material Selection (7.1477). The predominance of environmental factors reflects the increasing material and energy intensity of construction activities, particularly in developing economies. Meanwhile, the secondary role of economic factors indicates that financial feasibility acts as an enabler rather than the primary driver of sustainability adoption. Overall, the study demonstrates that sustainable construction practices are shaped by the interaction of multidimensional variables, highlighting the need for strengthened regulatory frameworks, professional capacity building, and life-cycle-oriented decision-making to support sustainable engineering practices in developing economies.

Green Entrepreneurship Practices and the Sustainability of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria

This study examined the effect of green entrepreneurship practices on the sustainability of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional survey research design was adopted, with data collected from 356 respondents using a structured questionnaire, achieving a 91.9% response rate. Descriptive and regression analyses were employed. Findings revealed a high level of adoption of green practices, with strong commitments to renewable energy (79.5%), financial resource allocation for environmental upgrades (77.8%), and process redesign (68.8%), though eco-friendly product development (64.3%) was the least adopted. Green practices positively contributed to SME sustainability, with 77.2% affirming enhanced community welfare and 74.7% reporting reduced operational costs. Regression analysis showed a very strong positive relationship (R = 0.864), with green practices explaining 74.7% of the variance in SME sustainability (R² = 0.747) and exerting a significant positive effect (β = 0.793, p < 0.05). The study concluded that green entrepreneurship significantly enhances SME sustainability. Recommendations include government incentives, green financing, and training programmes to facilitate adoption.
