All the jabuticaba formulations exerted protective metabolic effects; the whole fruit showed more consistent systemic metabolic improvements, whereas the microencapsulated peel extract demonstrated greater efficacy in modulating adipose tissue.

Abstract

Background/Objectives: Obesity induced by high-fat high-fructose (HFHF) diets is associated with adipose tissue expansion, dysregulated adipogenesis, chronic low-grade inflammation, and oxidative stress. Bioactive compounds have emerged as promising nutritional strategies to mitigate these alterations, although their stability and bioavailability remain limiting factors. This study investigated the effects of different forms of jabuticaba (Plinia sp.) consumption—whole fruit, freeze-dried peel, and phenolic microencapsulated peel extract—on adipose tissue remodeling, oxidative stress, and metabolic parameters in HFHF-fed mice. Methods: Male C57BL/6 mice were fed an HFHF diet for six weeks, followed by six weeks of intervention with the jabuticaba formulations. Results: HFHF feeding induced significant metabolic alterations, evidenced by increased body weight gain, abdominal perimeter, Lee index, and fasting glucose levels. Jabuticaba intake, regardless of formulation, reduced abdominal perimeter, final body weight, and Lee index (p < 0.05) without affecting food intake. Treatment also improved metabolic biomarkers, reducing serum glucose, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides, while increasing HDL cholesterol (p < 0.05). In addition, jabuticaba decreased visceral and total adipose tissue mass, attenuated adipocyte hypertrophy, and enhanced antioxidant defenses, leading to reduced oxidative damage in adipose tissue. Conclusions: All the jabuticaba formulations exerted protective metabolic effects; the whole fruit showed more consistent systemic metabolic improvements, whereas the microencapsulated peel extract demonstrated greater efficacy in modulating adipose tissue.

Effects of Passiflora incarnata Leaf Polyphenol Extract on High-Fat-Diet-Induced Metabolic Syndrome in Mice and Associated Changes in the Gut–Liver–Adipose Axis

It is suggested that PP, particularly at the high dose, ameliorated HFD-induced obesity and related metabolic disturbances; these benefits were accompanied by decreased caloric intake, changes in gut microbiota composition, hepatic transcriptomic profiles, and adipose thermogenic gene expression.

Moringa oleifera Lam. Seed Lectin (WSMoL) Reduces Visceral Adiposity, Dyslipidemia, Hyperglycemia, and Systemic Inflammation in Mice with a Metabolic Syndrome-like Condition

Moringa oleifera Lam. seeds contain lectins that exhibit interesting bioactive properties, but their effects on metabolic syndrome (MetS) remain poorly understood. This work evaluated the effects of the water-soluble lectin from M. oleifera seeds (WSMoL) on metabolic, inflammatory, and histopathological alterations in...

Dietary Supplementation with Powdered Cucumeropsis mannii Seeds Mitigates High-Fat Diet–Induced dysmetabolism and Hepatorenal injury in Pubertal Rats

High-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity is associated with metabolic dysfunction, oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, and progressive injury to metabolically active organs including the liver and kidneys. Cucumeropsis mannii is an underutilised oilseed rich in bioactive phytochemicals with reported antioxidant and hypo...

Dual Modulation of Lipid Metabolism by Adzuki Bean (Vigna angularis) Saponins Involving PPARα/γ Signaling and Gut Microbiota Remodeling in Obesogenic Diet-Induced Obese Mice

Obesity is a prevalent metabolic disorder characterized by excessive lipid accumulation. This study aimed to investigate the anti-obesity effects and underlying mechanisms of two triterpenoid saponin-rich extracts, designated disaccharide saponin-rich extract (DTS) and trisaccharide/tetrasaccharide saponin-rich extract...

Effects of bioprocessed potato peel extract on hepatic steatosis in obese rats: modulation of lipid metabolism, bile acid synthesis, and oxidative stress

Potato peels, a major component of food processing by-products, contribute substantially to the environmental waste burden. However, they contain diverse bioactive compounds with potential health-promoting properties. This study aimed to investigate the effects of potato peel extract (PPE) fermented with Rhizopus oryza...
