Abstract

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) improvement depends on the availability and effective utilization of genetically diverse germplasm. The present study aimed to characterize 24 selected oil palm germplasm accessions maintained at ICAR–Indian Institute of Oil Palm Research, which included Elaeis guineensis (17 duras and 2 teneras) and Elaeis oleifera (5 accessions), using IBPGR (1989) descriptors and to identify palms with economically important traits. The accessions represented diverse geographic origins from Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia. Considerable variability was recorded for tree form, fruit form, bunch traits, bunch quality components, and vegetative characters. Dura and tenera fruit forms were observed in Elaeis guineensis, with predominance of dura, while E. oleifera exhibited thick-shelled fruits. Bunch weight ranged from 3.76 to 44.01 kg, while oil to bunch varied from 5.70 to 21.50%. Palm height ranged from 2.2 to 9.0 m, indicating the presence of both compact and tall palms. Based on trait-specific performance for bunch traits, bunch components, and vegetative characteristics, palms viz., DOPR-G23 (O6), DOPR-G24 (O22), DOPR G53 (E.61), and DOPR-G59 (E.48) were identified as potential parental sources for utilisation in breeding programmes, being superior for high bunch weight, high fruit to bunch, high oil to bunch, and low shell to fruit, respectively.

Diversity analysis reveals significant variations in Dioscorea bulbifera L. collected from Kerala, India, enabled identification of superior germplasm

Dioscorea bulbifera L., commonly known as aerial yam or air potato, belongs to the family Dioscoreaceae. The plant has both medicinal and edible value. The aerial tuber (bulbils) and the underground tuber serve as good sources of staple food, rich in minerals and metabolites. Despite its potential to be elevated as a t...

Aroma and Agro-morphological Diversity in Traditional Rice (Oryza sativa) Germplasm from Eastern India

Traditional aromatic and quality rice (Oryza sativa L.)landraces from eastern India harbour valuable grain quality traits, yet their agromorphological diversity and fragrance genetics remain insufficiently characterized. This study evaluated 183 accessions from theIndian National GeneBank to characterize phenotypic var...

Agromorphological Evaluation and Selection of High-performing Okra ( Abelmoschus esculentus L.) Lines for Variety Development in Burkina Faso

Okra [ Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench] is a widespread traditional vegetable in Burkina Faso, whose fruits are rich in trace elements, vitamins, fiber, and mucilage. Despite favorable soil and climatic conditions, production remains low due to socio-cultural constraints and a lack of high-performing, adapted va...

Multi-Trait Characterization and Selection of Elite Wild Kiwifruit (Actinidia spp.) Germplasm from the Dabie Mountains of Hubei, China

Wild kiwifruit germplasm can broaden breeding pools through complementary fruit-quality and stress-response traits. The Hubei Dabie Mountains contain heterogeneous habitats, but coordinated evaluation of their wild Actinidia resources remains limited. Taxonomy and ploidy were determined for 117 accessions from eight si...

Mapping and characterisation of mandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco) genotypes across Eastern India

Citrus is one of the most significant fruit crops in the Rutaceae family. The Northeastern Himalayan region of India and the foothills of the Central and Western Himalayan regions, often referred to as the “treasure house of citrus germplasm” are rich sources of citrus genetic diversity. The present study aimed to asse...

Morphometric and Agronomic Characterization of Tepary Bean (Phaseolus acutifolius A. Gray) Landraces and Identification of High-yielding Accessions Introduced in Burkina Faso

Rainfed legume production in Burkina Faso is increasingly challenged by climatic variability. Diversifying grain-legume genetic resources may help address these constraints and support food security. Tepary bean (Phaseolus acutifolius A. Gray), a legume native to the south-western United States and northern Mexico, is...
