Evaluating the Ecological Functions of Plantation-Based Forest Restoration: Impacts on Biodiversity Recovery, Ecosystem Services, and Carbon Sequestration

Aug 2026 · Theoretical and Natural Science · Vol 184, pp. 83-90 · 0 citations

Abstract

Forests help maintain the diversity of life and regulate the environment in other ways. Due to continuous deforestation and habitat loss around the world, plantation-based forest restoration has gradually been employed to increase forest coverage and restore damaged environments. At present, it is unknown whether plantation forests can restore biodiversity and provide ecological services to the same extent. Assess the ecological functions of plantation-based forest restoration by evaluating their contributions to biodiversity recovery, ecosystem services and carbon sequestration in this paper. Other reasons for the failure of the restoration effort include single-crop forests, broken habitats, poor soil conditions and human activities. In addition, the above strategies for restoration include expanding the diversity of native species, building mixed-species forests, fostering natural regeneration, and conducting long-term biodiversity monitoring. Research has shown that while plantation forests can increase the proportion of vegetation and raise carbon sinks at an earlier stage, their low species diversity compared with natural forests is also a problem. Based on the results of the restoration work, native species can be used to increase structural diversity and carry out continuous management. In short, in the future, the plans for biodiversity protection and forest restoration should be combined to create resilient and stable forest ecosystems.

Determining Ecological Equivalence of Biodiversity Offset for Tropical Forests using Soil Physical and Chemical Properties

Ecological restoration of degraded forest ecosystems is critical for maintaining environmental quality, forest productivity, biodiversity conservation, and provision of ecosystem services. Soil chemical and physical properties are key indicators of forest ecosystem performance during restoration. However, the impacts o...

Forest Degradation and Desertification in a Changing Climate

Forest degradation and desertification are closely connected components of a broader socio-ecological problem in which land-use pressure, climatic stress and declining ecosystem resilience interact across landscapes. Forest degradation does not necessarily involve complete removal of tree cover; it may occur through bi...

ECOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS OF FORESTS: WATER PROTECTION, SOIL PROTECTION, AND CLIMATE REGULATION

The article examines the ecological functions of forests — water protection, soil protection, and climate-regulating. Based on an analysis of domestic and foreign sources, it is shown that forests play a key role in regulating hydrological regimes, preventing erosion and soil degradation, as well as in the global carbo...

Variation in the costs and ecological benefits of tropical natural forest regeneration

Natural regeneration is a cost-effective alternative to tree planting for restoring degraded and converted tropical forests, contributing to climate mitigation and biodiversity recovery. However, global variation in its costs and benefits remains poorly quantified, limiting the ability of restoration programmes to stra...

Ecology of Nitrogen Cycling in Young Forest Ecosystems: Drivers, Ecosystem Functioning, and Research Perspectives

Nitrogen cycling is a key determinant of ecosystem functioning, productivity, and carbon sequestration during forest development. This review synthesizes ecological evidence on nitrogen cycling in young forest ecosystems established through natural regeneration, afforestation, reforestation, or major disturbance across...

Towards resilient forest establishment in Europe: functional traits, genetic diversity and multifunctional design

Forest restoration and afforestation across Europe are accelerating, yet the decision-making processes governing forest establishment remain unevenly examined, especially from a biodiversity perspective. Considering this and the global environmental changes of climate shifts, land-use transitions, and biological invasi...
