TL;DR

2D-STE provides a reliable, non-invasive method for early assessment and clinical evaluation of right atrial dysfunction in OSAHS patients, and exhibits significant structural and functional alterations of the right atrium.

Abstract

Objective

This study aimed to unveil the right atrial function in patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) using two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (2D-STE).

Methods

A total of 120 OSAHS patients were enrolled as the OSAHS group, with 100 healthy individuals served as the control group. Conventional echocardiography assessed right atrial structure, including superior-inferior diameter, transverse diameter, area, and volume. Myocardial longitudinal strain parameters (reservoir strain (RASr), conduit strain (RAScd), and contraction strain (RASct)) were measured using 2D-STE. Comparisons were made between groups, and patients were further stratified by apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) into mild (5-14 events/h), moderate (15-39 events/h), and severe (≥ 40 events/h) subgroups. Correlation with AHI was assessed by Pearson correlation analysis.

Results

Compared to controls, the OSAHS group showed progressive decreases in RASr and RAScd, and increases in RASct and transverse diameter with increasing disease severity (P < 0.05). AHI was negatively correlated with RASr and RAScd, and positively correlated with RASct and transverse diameter (P < 0.05).

Conclusion

Patients with OSAHS exhibit significant structural and functional alterations of the right atrium. 2D-STE provides a reliable, non-invasive method for early assessment and clinical evaluation of right atrial dysfunction in OSAHS patients.

Evaluating the myocardial functions of the forgotten right ventricle in children with nephrotic syndrome utilizing traditional echocardiography, two-dimensional speckle tracking and three-dimensional echocardiography

Primary nephrotic syndrome (NS) is associated with systemic effects that may impact cardiac function, although several studies have explored left ventricle in children with NS. Few studies investigated right ventricle (RV) in this disease. Therefore, the study aimed to provide a comprehensive evaluation of RV functions...

Association between CHA2DS2-VASc score and left atrial function by speckle-tracking echocardiography in patients with sinus rhythm

The CHA2DS2-VASc score is an established tool for thromboembolic risk assessment in atrial fibrillation. Individual components of the score may affect left atrial (LA) function. Speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE) enables detection of early, subtle changes in the LA. This study aimed to test whether LA function, as...

EXPRESS: Evaluation of Left Atrial Reservoir Strain by Two-Dimensional Speckle-Tracking Echocardiography in Cats with Stage B1 Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.

OBJECTIVES Left atrial reservoir strain (LA S_R), assessed by two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography (2D-STE), reflects left atrial (LA) function and may reveal subtle alterations in LA mechanics in cats with American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) stage B1 hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)...

SLEEP APNEA IN STABLE HEART FAILURE: CLINICAL, POLYGRAPHIC AND ECHOCARDIOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) is a frequent comorbidity in patients with heart failure (HF), contributing to disease progression and poorer outcomes, yet remains largely underdiagnosed. This study aimed to characterize the clinical, polygraphic, and echocardiographic features of sleep apnea phenot...

CMR-based aortic stiffness parameters in a symptomatic high risk obstructive sleep apnea cohort: results from the population-based Hamburg City Health Study

Aortic stiffness (AS) parameters as pulse wave velocity (PWV), aortic distensibility of the ascending and descending aorta (AD AoAsc, AD AoDesc) and pulse pressure (PP) are marker for vascular ageing, whereas data concerning obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in population-based cohorts are sparse. Thus, we aimed to identif...

Clinical Value of Real-Time Three-Dimensional Echocardiography for Evaluating Right Ventricular Structure and Function in Patients With Pulmonary Hypertension Across Different Echocardiographic Pulmonary Artery Systolic Pressure Strata.

OBJECTIVE To explore the value of real-time three-dimensional echocardiography (RT-3DE) in evaluating right ventricular (RV) structure and function in patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH) across different echocardiographic pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP) strata. METHODS A total of 150 patients with PH...
