Abstract
Osteoporosis reduces bone integrity, significantly increasing the risk of fractures. This study aims to identify alternative screening methods for assessing osteoporosis in low-income settings, where access to dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is limited. A literature review was conducted, analyzing articles from Google Scholar, PubMed, and institutional libraries published between 2015 and 2025, to identify auxiliary methods for screening for osteoporosis when DXA is not available. Conventional radiographs, when analyzed through the assessment of the Cortical Thickness Index (CTI) and the Calcar-Canal Ratio (CCR), demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity as auxiliary screening tools. However, cutoff values vary significantly among different ethnic populations, indicating the absence of a universal diagnostic standard and underscoring the need for population-specific thresholds. Limited access to DXA worldwide delays early detection of osteoporosis and increases the risk of fragility fractures. Further studies are needed to standardize these metrics in Mexico, which would enable timely diagnosis and treatment in resource-limited settings, thereby improving patient outcomes and quality of life.
A potential screening method using low-cost foot radiographs to identify patients with low BMD, which may support earlier detection and referral for bone health evaluation is described.

INTRODUCTION
Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the reference standard for osteoporosis diagnosis, but access remains limited in many settings. MRI-based vertebral bone quality (VBQ) has emerged as an opportunistic screening tool derived from routine lumbar imaging; however, its diagnostic performance is uncerta...

Three-dimensional HU represents a novel vBMD assessment methodology that achieves diagnostic parity with QCT using conventional CT scanners without extra radiation exposure or specialized equipment, and demonstrates that precise, universally accessible osteoporosis screening is now achievable.

PURPOSE
Early identification of individuals at risk for osteoporosis is essential for timely intervention and prevention of fragility fractures. This study aimed to assess the diagnostic value of dental radiographic indices obtained from panoramic radiography and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) for the early detec...

The WBOS showed the best exploratory discrimination but requires further validation against DXA or quantitative CT before clinical implementation, and Opportunistic multisite assessment of bone status using WBCT in polytrauma appears feasible.
