TL;DR

Lack of pretreatment with P2Y12 inhibitors, absence of hematological disorders, and absence of UTI were factors that influenced the timing of hip fracture surgery within 48 hours of admission.

Abstract

Purpose The aim of our study is to identify the factors that influence hip fracture surgery in elderly patients within 48 hours of hospital admission. Materials and Methods We retrospectively reviewed hip fracture databases of patients who underwent surgery for hip fracture between 2020 and 2023. We excluded patients with pathological fractures, coronavirus disease 2019 infection, multiple traumas, and who died without undergoing surgery. The final study cohort included 452 patients with hip fractures. From the total participants, 201 patients underwent hip surgery within 48 hours of admission. For data analysis, we performed multivariate logistic regression with odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for each variable. A P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that lack of pretreatment with P2Y12 inhibitors (adjusted OR 3.23, 95% CI 1.41-7.41), absence of hematological disorders (adjusted OR 3.53, 95% CI 1.35-9.23), and absence of urinary tract infections (UTI) (adjusted OR 9.59, 95% CI 1.21-75.71) in geriatric patients with hip fracture were conducive to early surgery. Conclusion Lack of pretreatment with P2Y12 inhibitors, absence of hematological disorders, and absence of UTI were factors that influenced the timing of hip fracture surgery within 48 hours of admission.

Epidemiology and its results in hip fractures followed in postoperative intensive care

The global proportion of individuals aged ≥ 65 years is approximately 9%, and hip fractures (HFx) represent one of the most common and serious injuries in this population. This study retrospectively evaluated postoperative intensive care unit (ICU) admissions among patients with HFx, focusing on 30-day, 90-day, and 1-y...

Effects of Capacity-Related Delay to Hip Fracture Surgery on Mortality: A Matched-Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND Timely surgery is emphasized in hip fracture care. Prior studies examining this have failed to distinguish adequately between delays for medical optimization and those due to limited operative capacity, introducing important confounders. This study aimed to determine the impact of capacity-related delays on...

Clinical, Hematologic, and Inflammatory Factors Associated with Early Mortality and Postoperative ICU Admission After Geriatric Hip Fracture Surgery

Background: This study evaluated whether routinely available admission hematologic and inflammatory markers remained associated with postoperative intensive care unit (ICU) admission and 1-month mortality when considered alongside established clinical and perioperative factors. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 598...

Incidence and risk factors of acute kidney injury after hip fracture surgery in oldest old patients

Objective: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a critical clinical event after hip fracture operation. Our study aimed to determine risk factors and the incidence of postoperative AKI among patients ≥ 85 years who underwent hip fracture surgery and were admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU). Methods: The medical data of al...
