Abstract
The wetting behavior between CaO–SiO

‐based mold fluxes and stainless steel substrate was investigated, as a function of elemental silicon (Si) content using sessile drop method. The results indicate that the contact angle decreases significantly from 56.7° to 39.2°, with a small addition of Si (2 wt%) at 1673 K. However, the contact angle increases to 49.5° gradually when Si content further increases to 6 wt%. A distinct layer with the thickness of 195–410 μm is found and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy, which reveals that Si migration occurs at the interface from the flux into the steel substrate. The migration of Si increases the polymerization of melt structure, as confirmed by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations. The increase of bridging oxygen and complex Q

silicate units in melt structure as the Si content in flux is getting higher, which weakens the wettability of mold flux on steel substrate when more Si was added. The results highlight the role of Si in interfacial modification and melt‐structure evolution. These findings provide useful guidance for optimizing Si‐containing exothermic mold fluxes and improving flux/steel interfacial performance during high‐speed continuous casting.
This study investigates the effects of Ce (0–150 ppm) on the subrapid solidification process of 2.5 wt.% Si nonoriented silicon steel using a droplet solidification technique that simulates the strip casting process, with particular focus on interfacial wetting behavior, heat transfer characteristics, naturally depos...

This work investigates the combined effects of atmosphere and alloying with calcium on the high-temperature interaction between a molten Mg-10Ca alloy and a polished titanium substrate. The sessile drop method was employed with non-contact heating and capillary purification, enabling the generation of an oxide-free Mg...

The surface chemistry of additively manufactured aluminum alloys plays a critical role in corrosion resistance and joining with external materials. In this work, the near-surface elemental composition of a laser powder bed fusion (PBF-LB/M) processed Al-Mg-Si-Zr alloy was characterized by glow discharge optical emissio...

In this study, an “oxide layer” was formed on the surface of Cu-0.97Cr-0.11Zr alloy sheets by introducing oxygen via a non-vacuum solid solution treatment, followed by vacuum solid solution and aging treatments to obtain a layered composite microstructure. The macro- and microstructures were characterized using optical...
