Abstract

The slow crystallization rate of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) remains a major limitation for its processing and application. To address this challenge, a series of PET copolyesters were synthesized via melt polycondensation using multifunctional polyols as modifiers. Experimental findings indicate that among the selected polyols, pentaerythritol (PER) exhibits a uniquely superior nucleating ability, markedly enhancing the crystallization behavior compared to glycerol (GLY) and sorbitol (SOR). Both isothermal and non‐isothermal crystallization analyses revealed that the cold crystallization temperature of PET‐PER 0.5 decreased substantially from 146.3°C to 127.9°C, while the half‐crystallization time (t 1 / 2 ) was reduced to 0.7 min (approximately half that of PET) demonstrating a significant acceleration in crystallization kinetics. Furthermore, the incorporation of polyols concurrently improved the thermal stability of the copolyesters. This study confirms that PER serves as an effective crystallization modifier for PET, offering a viable strategy for the development of novel PET materials that combine rapid crystallization capability with enhanced thermal stability.

Effects of Fillers on the Crystallization and Degradation Behavior of Poly(ethylene terephthalate): A Review

Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) is an important semicrystalline polymer, but its relatively slow crystallization restricts processing efficiency and dimensional stability. The incorporation of fillers is an effective means of promoting PET crystallization, while the resulting polymer–filler interface may also alter...

Preparation of High-Performance Copolyamide 6 via a Side-Methyl Topological Structure Design Strategy

To address the insufficient toughness and transparency of nylon-6 (PA6) caused by high crystallinity, this study proposes a copolymer strategy based on side-methyl structural regulation. A series of PA6/D6 copolyamides were prepared via in situ melt copolymerization of ε-caprolactam, 2-methyl-1,5-pentanediamine, and...

Study of Transesterification Reaction in Copolymers of Poly(ethylene terephthalate) and Poly(ethylene furanoate) Using Reactive Extrusion

Poly(ethylene terephthalate-co-furanoate) (PETF) copolymers offer a promising route to improve the sustainability and performance of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)-based materials. In this study, PETF copolymers containing 10 and 30 wt % poly(ethylene furanoate) (PEF) were produced via reactive extrusion, where s...

Modulating Crystallization Behavior to Improve Melt Processability and Mechanical Performance in PCT Copolyesters via Benzenedimethanol Incorporation

Poly(1,4-cyclohexanedimethylene terephthalate) (PCT) suffers from a narrow melt-processing window and low elongation at break, limiting manufacturability and toughness. Rigid 1,4-benzenedimethanol (BDM) was incorporated via melt polycondensation, followed by solid-state polymerization to increase molar mass, and poly...

Upcycling of PET Waste by Incorporating a Malic Acid-Based Monomer for High Performance and Chemically Recyclable Copolyesters

Herein, a highly rigid monomer, 2-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,3-dioxoisoindoline-5-carboxylic acid (HTI), was readily prepared from biosourced malic acid. A series of PET copolyesters were fabricated through an in situ chemical upcycling strategy, in which HTI units were inserted into the backbones of the PET waste via a depo...
