Abstract

Yttrium aluminium garnet (YAG) nano powder was synthesised from yttria powder and aluminium isopropoxide via the sol-gel method and then calcined at 1500°C for 2 hours to obtain a pure YAG phase. Zirconia-toughened alumina (ZTA) composites containing 15% zirconia were mechanically mixed, then 10, 20 and 30 wt.% nano-synthesised YAG powder were added and mixed with ZTA powder. All four composites were fired at four sintering temperatures starting from 1575°C, with 25°C intervals. The lower apparent porosity and high bulk density were achieved at 1675°C, where X-ray diffraction analysis, microstructure and mechanical properties were carried out. In this study, a ZTA composite with 10% YAG additives exhibited a maximum flexural strength of 396.5 MPa and a fracture toughness of 3.95 MPa.m0.5. Such properties were achieved due to their low apparent porosity and the maintaining of zirconia in the tetragonal phase after sintering. It was found that YAG addition enhanced the mechanical properties of ZTA, as it is located at the grain boundaries and acts as inclusions, which can change the path of crack propagation and improve the fracture toughness of the sintered sample through the crack deflection mechanism.

Effect of hydroxyapatite and yttria-stabilized zirconia nano-powders on surface integrity of Ti-6Al-4V in powder-mixed electrical discharge machining with multi-response optimization

This study investigated the influence of nano-powder type on the surface integrity of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy during powder-mixed electrical discharge machining (PMEDM). Three nano-powder conditions, namely hydroxyapatite (HA), yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ), and a mixed powder (50 wt.% HA + 50 wt.% YSZ), were dispe...

SYNTHESIS, PHASE COMPOSITION AND PHYSICAL-CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF MULLITE-CORDIERITE REFRACTORY CERAMICS BASED ON WASTE ALUMINUM DROSS AND MgO

In the present work, mullite-cordierite refractory ceramics were synthesized by partially replacing chamotte (10% and 20%) with waste aluminum dross and MgO in the MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 system. The influence of sintering temperature (1250 °C and 1350 °C) and holding time (1h and 3h) on the phase composition, microstructure an...

Influence Of The Ceramic Phase On The Mechanical Properties Of 316L-based Interpenetrating Phase Composites With Yttria-stabilized Zirconia And Alumina-toughened Zirconia

Metal-ceramic interpenetrating phase composites (IPCs) are a special type of composite material in which both phases (metal and ceramic) are continuous and intertwined three-dimensionally. This structure forms in a specific composition window, depending on several factors. Outside this window particle-reinforced materi...
