Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of organic pollutants affecting the environment as well as individual health that has been linked to various diseases including cancer. Detection is focused on PAHs themselves for environmental analysis, and on urinary metabolites for human exposure assessment. Laboratory‐based detection methodologies such as liquid or gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry have been established for more than 30 years and significantly improved over the years in terms of sensitivity and throughput. Outside of a laboratory environment, sensing close to the point‐of‐care could enable quick and simple analysis for routine testing, and various bio‐ and chemosensors utilizing different transducer designs have been developed to address this issue. This narrative review reports the state of the art in sensing PAHs and their metabolites, discussing laboratory‐based techniques before focusing on techniques that promise to enable in‐situ use at the point‐of‐care and in environmental settings.
Polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs), notably unsubstituted and methylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs and Me-PAHs), are a group of organic pollutants consisting of two or more fused aromatic rings. They are primarily generated through the incomplete combustion of organic materials and exhibit high toxicity,...

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a well-known endocrine-disrupting chemical that poses risks to human health by interfering with hormonal systems. Despite regulatory restrictions, BPA remains widely used in polycarbonates and epoxy resins, leading to its continuous release into the environment. Its presence in aquatic systems and...

Humans are exposed to a multitude of non-genetic factors throughout their lives, all of which are encompassed in the concept of the exposome. To assess its chemical component, combinations of complementary analytical techniques are needed for broad chemical space coverage. However, approaches for combined organic and i...

This study evaluated the concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil, water, and edible plants within cashew nut processing clusters in Enugu, Nigeria. Following liquid–liquid and solid–liquid extractions, the concentration of sixteen PAHs congeners were determined using gas chromatography coupl...

Introduction Biomonitoring of commercial endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) increasingly underpins exposure assessment and risk evaluation, yet most large-scale studies still rely on indirect, enzymatic hydrolysis–based methods whose quantitative performance has not been systematically verified. Here, we describe th...

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are highly persistent contaminants widely used in industrial processes and consumer products. Soil is an important PFAS reservoir and a key medium linking contaminant transport, ecological exposure, and human health risks, making effective monitoring essential. Conventional me...
