Abstract

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are widely used additive chemicals that can migrate into food during production, processing, and packaging, yet data on their occurrence and dietary risk in Taiwan remain limited. In this study, a validated high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) method was established for the determination of 16 legacy and emerging OPFRs in 150 commercial food samples covering 15 major food categories available on the Taiwanese market. Population exposure was further evaluated by Monte Carlo simulation across 14 age- and sex-specific groups. OPFRs were widely detected in the sampled products, with tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP) showing the highest detection frequency. Contamination was heterogeneously distributed across food categories, with the highest levels observed in sauces and seasonings, particularly spice sauces, and elevated concentrations also found in oils, poultry, seafood, whole grains, and livestock products. Processed foods generally contained higher OPFR levels than their unprocessed counterparts. Food lipid content was positively associated with ΣOPFR concentrations, but packaging-related differences could not be substantiated due to limited sample size. Dietary exposure varied markedly by age, with the highest modeled intakes observed in children aged 3-6 years, followed by infants aged 0-3 years. TCIPP and trimethyl phosphate (TMP) were the major contributors to total dietary exposure. Despite these differences, all endpoint-specific non-carcinogenic risks remained below the level of concern (hazard index, HI < 1), and estimated carcinogenic risks for TMP, TCEP, TNBP, and TEHP were below 10-6. Overall, these findings indicate no immediate dietary health concern based on this market snapshot under the current assessment scenario, while supporting continued monitoring and refined cumulative risk assessment, particularly for young children and highly processed foods.

Monitoring and Dietary Risk Assessment of Pesticide Residues and Mycotoxins in Fresh Maize: A Nationwide Study from China.

Pesticide residues and mycotoxins are important maize contaminants, but their occurrence and dietary risks in fresh maize remain unclear. In this study, ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) methods were established for analyzing 70 pesticides and 15 mycotoxins and were appl...

Levels and Health Risk Assessment of Selected Heavy Metals in Selected Packaged Culinary Herbs Consumed in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria

Culinary herbs are widely consumed in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, for flavoring and dietary enhancement. However, increasing environmental pollution from petroleum exploration, industrial emissions, and vehicular activities raises concerns about heavy metal contamination in food products. This research work was done to det...

Multi-Media Exposure, Selective Accumulation and Health Risks of Organochlorine Pesticides in Human Serum under Post-Ban Conditions

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), despite being banned, persist in the environment and continue to pose potential risks to human health. This exploratory study investigated the concentrations of multiple OCPs in serum samples from 10 local residents and 52 surrounding environmental samples, including soil (n = 10), air...

Multi-Pesticide Residue Occurrence and Age-Specific Dietary Exposure Risk Assessment of Apples from Major Production Areas in Xinjiang, China

To characterize pesticide residues and age-specific dietary exposure risks in apples from Xinjiang’s main production areas, 120 samples were collected from Aksu, Ili, and Kashgar in October 2025 and screened for 82 pesticides using GC–MS/MS, LC–MS/MS, and GC–ECD. Chronic, acute, and cumulative dietary exposure was subs...

Toxic metal exposure from canned foods: a comprehensive risk assessment study in the middle east

Heavy metal contamination in food remains a major public health concern, particularly in regions with limited routine monitoring. This study evaluated the concentrations of toxic metals in commonly consumed canned plant-based foods marketed in Erbil, Iraq. A total of 54 samples of canned tomatoes, olives, and mixed veg...
