TL;DR

Age at diagnosis, disease stage, and surgical resection status were independently associated with OS, with stage emerging as the strongest determinant in HNPGLs.

Abstract

Objectives

Head and neck paragangliomas (HNPGLs) are rare neuroendocrine tumors with heterogeneous behavior, making prognostic assessment challenging. Although generally indolent, a subset exhibits malignant potential, and robust prognostic determinants remain insufficiently defined. This study aimed to identify clinical and pathological factors independently associated with overall survival (OS) in patients with HNPGLs.

Methods

We performed a retrospective Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)-based cohort study (1975-2021). Demographic, clinicopathologic, and treatment variables were evaluated using Kaplan-Meier survival estimates, Cox regression models, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC)-derived cutoffs.

Results

Among 280 patients, most tumors originated in the carotid body (77.5%). In univariable analyses, extra-carotid location, tumor size ≥ 34.5 mm, absence of surgery, advanced stage, and older age were associated with poorer OS. In multivariable analysis, older age, advanced stage, and lack of surgery remained independently associated with reduced OS.

Conclusions

Age at diagnosis, disease stage, and surgical resection status were independently associated with OS, with stage emerging as the strongest determinant in HNPGLs. Associations involving tumor size and extra-carotid location should be interpreted as exploratory findings.

Prognostic factors in pediatric head and neck rhabdomyosarcoma: a 30-year retrospective study in Brazil

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the survival outcomes of pediatric patients with head and neck (HN) rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) treated at a reference center in Brazil, comparing them with those of patients with non-head and neck (NHN) RMS. Additionally, it sought to identify the clinical-pathological variables, hist...

Clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular correlates in resected primary adrenocortical carcinoma: a single-institution cohort study.

Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is a rare endocrine malignancy with heterogeneous outcomes after resection. We conducted a retrospective single-institution cohort study of 65 resected primary ACCs from 2010 to 2025. Clinicopathologic features, tumor-type-specific histologic scoring, immunohistochemistry for p53, β-caten...

Clinical Heterogeneity and Survival Disparities in Leiomyosarcoma: An Exploratory Single-Center Retrospective Observational Study

Background: Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a rare aggressive sarcoma with substantial heterogeneity in anatomical presentation, stage, treatment, and survival. We evaluated clinical characteristics, treatment patterns, and survival, with particular emphasis on whether anatomical site independently predicted overall survival (...

Clinicopathological Features, Treatment Modalities, and Prognostic Factors of Leptomeningeal Carcinomatosis in Patients with Breast Cancer: A Single-Center Retrospective Analysis

Aim: Leptomeningeal metastasis (LM) from breast cancer carries a poor prognosis, and most published cohorts originate from high-volume referral centers. We aimed to identify factors associated with overall survival (OS) after an LM diagnosis in routine practice and to describe diagnostic and treatment patterns.Methods:...

Number of examined lymph nodes and overall survival in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma: a population-based study suggesting a staging benefit

The prognostic role of lymph node yield (LNY) in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) remains debated. We aimed to clarify the role of LNY by examining its association with nodal detection and overall survival (OS). We identified patients with surgically resected ICC (2004–2022) from the SEER database. Mult...

Beyond TNM: Tumor Volume as a Prognostic Marker in Laryngeal Cancer.

OBJECTIVES The objective of this study is to determine whether radiologic tumor volume adds prognostic value for overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) and to evaluate associations with T stage, nodal status, histologic grade, subsite, and treatment modality....
