Mapping the socio-technical evolution of information overload: a bibliometric and topic modeling analysis

Abstract

This study aims to systematically map the evolution, influence structure and thematic organization of information overload research and to uncover latent research directions not directly observable from bibliometric metadata, with particular attention to the socio-technical dynamics of the digital workplace. A corpus of 1,081 English-language research articles, review articles and conference papers indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection and Scopus and published between 2000 and March 2026 was analyzed. The study combines descriptive bibliometric indicators, keyword co-occurrence network analysis and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling to examine the structural and semantic development of the field. Research on information overload has expanded rapidly since 2018, reaching a peak in 2025. The literature exhibits a pronounced socio-technical structure linking algorithmic filtering, information systems, knowledge management, managerial decision-making and employee well-being. Topic modeling identifies eight major themes, with recommender systems and social media in digital work environments emerging as the most prominent and fastest-growing streams. This article advances information overload research by integrating bibliometric science mapping and machine learning within a unified analytical framework. It shows how the field has evolved from cognitive and communication-centered perspectives toward a broader socio-technical understanding of digital work and offers a structured agenda for cumulative theory development.

Diabetes: Bibliometric and Semantic Analysis with LDA Technology to Identify Current Trends in Research Directions

Background: The rapid growth of the diabetes-related literature makes it difficult to characterize the thematic structure of the field using conventional bibliometric indicators alone. This study aimed to combine bibliometric network mapping with probabilistic topic modeling to describe major research directions in diabetes and their citation visibility. Methods: We analyzed 211,637 Scopus-indexed publications classified as articles, reviews, short surveys, or conference papers and published between January 2015 and May 2025. Bibliometric mapping was performed using VOSviewer, and semantic analysis was conducted on publication titles using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). Model interpretation was supported by coherence score, topic diversity, perplexity, dominant-topic assignment, and expert validation of topic labels. Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI) was used descriptively to compare citation visibility across thematic areas over time. Results: VOSviewer identified seven keyword co-occurrence clusters, while LDA produced six broad semantic topics: cardiovascular and metabolic risks, diabetes management and quality of life, therapy approaches, diabetes complications, gestational diabetes, and pathophysiology and modeling. The six-topic LDA model showed c_v = 0.392, topic diversity = 0.73, and perplexity = −7.18. Publication-share and FWCI trajectories indicated that cardiovascular and metabolic risk research remained the largest thematic area, whereas quality of life and disease control showed the most marked increase in citation visibility. Conclusions: The integrated bibliometric–semantic workflow identified the main thematic domains and citation-visibility patterns shaping contemporary diabetes research. The findings highlight the continued dominance of cardiometabolic comorbidity research, the growing visibility of quality-of-life and disease-control topics, and the visibility of digital and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-assisted approaches in complication screening and monitoring. This framework provides an interpretable basis for tracking research priorities and emerging directions in diabetes-related scientific literature.

Bibliometric Analysis of the B Corp Movement: Implications for Researchers in Türkiye

This study aims to map the intellectual and conceptual landscape of the B Corp movement within the scientific literature through a quantitative bibliometric analysis. Utilising the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection database, the research analyses 108 peer-reviewed articles published between 2007 and 2025. Data visualisation and network analysis, including co-authorship and keyword co-occurrence, were performed using the VOSviewer software. The results show that the number of publications has been growing exponentially since 2011, and the majority of the articles are in the business and management field. A total of 282 keywords were evaluated, and “B Corp” (total link strength: 315) and “Corporate Social Responsibility” (total link strength: 92) were identified as central conceptual pillars. The most cited influential work is by Julie Battilana and Alnoor Ebrahim, with 728 citations. Geographic concentration is still strong in the USA and Europe, but research on emerging economies, such as Türkiye, where there are presently 15 certified B Corps, is critically lacking. The results show a conceptual move from general corporate responsibility to specific issues of 'social impact' and 'employee ownership'. The paper concludes with a research agenda for future research that can help bridge the gap between global norms and local institutional contexts, particularly for researchers in Türkiye.

A bibliometric study of social capital in family businesses research: temporal and pattern analysis

Social capital (SC) has attracted growing attention in family business (FB) research due to its critical role in value creation, business growth, and the sustainability of competitive advantages. This study provides a systematic and up-to-date synthesis of SC in FB research by mapping its intellectual structure, identifying influential authors and publications, and clarifying the conceptual evolution of the field. The study employs a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of 633 SC-related FB publications indexed in Scopus between 1980 and 2025. Using science-mapping techniques and a temporal perspective, the analysis traces the evolution of research themes, identifies dominant clusters, identifies the most debated topics and connects emerging research streams. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed to ensure transparency and rigor in the identification and selection of relevant studies. The findings reveal a clear three-phase development of SC research in family businesses (FBs)—Emergent, Scaling, and Expansion—characterized by increasing thematic integration and conceptual consolidation over the past four decades. The analysis identifies distinct schools of thought and highlights a shift from fragmented, relational perspectives toward more strategic and capability-oriented approaches to SC in FBs. This study advances FB research by providing the first comprehensive bibliometric synthesis of SC scholarship in FBs over four decades. The study further extends existing research by systematically comparing SC scholarship in FBs with the broader small business literature, thereby identifying conceptual gaps, limits to transferability, and boundary conditions specific to family-controlled firms.

Conceptual Networks and Research Trends in New Economic Sociology: A Bibliometric Exploration

This study aims to systematically reveal the intellectual structure, collaboration networks, and thematic orientations of the field by examining the New Economic Sociology (NES) literature indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection database using bibliometric methods. A search conducted on October 19, 2025, using the keyword ‘new economic sociology’ yielded 238 publications covering the period 1987-2025. Analyses reveal that NES, developed under the influence of founding figures such as Granovetter, Swedberg, and Beckert, has evolved into a multi-layered field of research that examines economic action within social networks, institutions, cultural frameworks, and uncertainty dynamics. This study analysed co-authorship, citation networks, country and institutional contributions, keyword formations, bibliographic matches of documents and authors, and common citation structures using VOSviewer. The findings show that NES has a strong theoretical core and that the themes of embeddedness, network relations, and institutional coordination remain dominant. Sustainable Development Goals analyses reveal that the NES intersects meaningfully with goals such as innovation, economic growth, reducing inequalities, and sustainable cities. This study aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of the current state of the field and future research directions by making the structural characteristics of the NES literature visible.

Computational Mapping of Interdisciplinary Intellectual Linkages in Network Science Using Bibliometric Metadata

This paper presents an information technology-driven bibliometric framework for mapping the structural and temporal evolution of interdisciplinary intellectual linkage and apparent conceptual diffusion within the domain of social network analysis. Utilizing large-scale metadata from Web of Science, we construct multiple bibliometric networks representing citation, co-authorship, and keyword relationships. Through computational methods including fractional normalization, Search Path Count (SPC) edge-weighting, and island detection algorithms, we identify latent communities and bibliometric pathways that suggest patterns of intellectual association and citation-mediated influence between social sciences, physics, neuroscience, and behavioral ecology. These computational outputs represent citation-mediated influence patterns and co-occurrence structures, not direct observation of knowledge transmission. Our results highlight the role of digital libraries and algorithmic normalization in addressing terminological and data-quality challenges, alongside name disambiguation procedures and network pruning to mitigate citation boundary issues. This paper contributes to the domain of information technology by demonstrating scalable computational techniques for uncovering hidden intellectual structures and bibliometric evidence of knowledge flows in an increasingly interdisciplinary research landscape.
