The Music Production Communication Overlay (MPCO) is an evidence-based instructional framework that embeds communication development directly into existing music production coursework by integrating targeted prompts, modeling, and evaluative language into assignments, studio workflows, and feedback cycles. Designed for students from introductory through advanced levels, MPCO makes communication skills such as articulating technical intent, describing listening-based decisions, responding to feedback, collaborating professionally, and reflecting on creative processes explicit and assessable without adding new coursework. Grounded in research on self-regulated learning, disciplinary literacy, social constructivism, and reflective practice, the framework positions communication as inseparable from technical competence and essential for professional readiness. Implementation occurs through small, intentional instructional adjustments, while assessment is integrated into existing rubrics and observations of student work over time. By strengthening feedback literacy, workflow transparency, and collaborative dialogue, MPCO addresses gaps in interpersonal skill development and supports modular, industry-aligned curricula, providing a scalable, low-overhead model for enhancing both learning and professional practice in music production education.
