Abstract

This study was motivated by the continued occurrence of inaccuracies in Indonesian writing in online news, particularly in the aspects of spelling, punctuation, and standard word usage. Linguistic accuracy in news portals is important because online media not only convey information but also function as models of Indonesian language use in the digital public sphere. This study aims to identify and describe the forms of writing errors found in one selected Tribun Jabar news article, classify the types of errors, and provide corrected forms in accordance with Indonesian language rules. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach using documentation, close reading, and note-taking techniques. The data were analysed through identification, classification, interpretation, and the formulation of alternative corrections based on the categories of spelling, punctuation, standard word usage, diction, and sentence effectiveness. The findings reveal 18 instances of writing errors. The most dominant errors occur in standard word usage, diction, and sentence effectiveness, with 8 instances (44.45%). Errors in spelling, typing, formatting, and writing consistency account for 6 instances (33.33%), while punctuation and spacing errors account for 4 instances (22.22%). These findings indicate that language problems in online news are not limited to technical inaccuracies but also involve imprecision in word choice and sentence construction. The study implies the need to strengthen journalistic language quality control, particularly in the editing process of online news production, and highlights the value of news texts as authentic materials for Indonesian language learning. However, because the analysis is limited to one selected news article, the findings cannot yet be generalized to the overall language practices of the Tribun Jabar news portal.

Error Analysis of Grammatical Errors in Junior High School Students’ Recount Text Writing

Writing in English is a crucial ability in the modern, globalized society. English, one of the most popular languages in the world, is essential for communication, commerce, education, and technology. Writing well in English enables people to communicate with people from another country, share information, and clearly convey ideas. For EFL (English Foreign Language) learners, mastering English grammar is still a major issue, especially in settings where English is not used for daily communication. This study looks at grammatical error and most common grammatical errors in the recount texts written by SMP VIP Asy-Syafi’iyyah Purworejo students. This study differs from previous studies by focusing on a  pesantren-based school context. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the errors based on Burt, Dulay, and Krashen on Surface Strategy Taxonomy. The data sources of this research are the recount texts created by 18 seventh-grade students of SMP VIP Asy-Syafi’iyyah Purworejo. The results of this research found 242 grammatical errors: omission (19%), addition (9%), misformation (69%), and misordering (3%) Misformation was the most dominant error. The finding suggests that English teachers in pesantren-based schools should focus more on verb tense instruction to mitigate misunderstanding in written English communication.

ANALISIS KESALAHAN PENGGUNAAN BAHASA INDONESIA PADA KARANGAN NARASI SISWA

ABSTRACT One important aspect of language proficiency is writing skill. Writing enables students to express their ideas, opinions, and thoughts clearly through written texts. This study aims to analyze errors in the use of the Indonesian language found in students' narrative essays. A descriptive research method was employed in this study. The data were collected from 55 narrative essays produced through a writing test. The analysis was based on the theory of language errors classified according to linguistic factors, with a focus on morphological and lexical errors. The findings reveal the presence of both morphological and lexical errors in students' essays. Morphological errors include incorrect use of affixes (prefixes, suffixes, and confixes), reduplication errors (both base-word and affixed-word reduplication), preposition errors (e.g., di and ke), and spelling or writing errors. Lexical errors involve inappropriate selection and use of Indonesian vocabulary as well as interference from regional languages, particularly Besemah, Palembang, and Javanese. The study further indicates that these errors are primarily caused by students’ lack of carefulness in writing and the influence of their regional language backgrounds.

Exploration of Arabic Collocation Patterns in the Indonesia Al-Youm News Corpus

This study investigates the structural and semantic characteristics of Arabic collocations in the Indonesia Al-Youm digital news corpus, a corpus compiled from Arabic-language online news texts reporting Indonesian social, political, cultural, and economic issues. Using Sketch Engine’s Multiword Term extraction feature, the study identifies and classifies the top 100 recurrent multiword units according to their morphosyntactic structures, grammatical functions, and semantic domains. The findings show that Arabic journalistic discourse in this corpus is dominated by nominal constructions, particularly idafah, noun–adjective patterns, and Masdar-based formations. Semantically, the collocations cluster around six domains: media identity and digital technology, politics and diplomacy, social protection and administration, economy and development, tourism, culture, and geography, and proper names. The novelty of this study lies in its corpus-based mapping of Arabic collocation patterns within an Indonesian digital news context, an area that remains underexplored in Arabic corpus linguistics. The results contribute to the description of Arabic journalistic phraseology and provide empirical input for Arabic for Specific Purposes, especially journalistic Arabic and media translation instruction.

GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN INDONESIAN EFL STUDENTS’ WRITING: A LIBRARY RESEARCH FROM THE PERSPECTIVES OF CONTRASTIVE ANALYSIS AND ERROR ANALYSIS

ABSTRACT Writing is one of the most challenging skills for learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) because it requires the integration of linguistic, cognitive, and communicative competencies. In higher education, writing proficiency is essential for producing various academic texts; however, Indonesian EFL students continue to experience grammatical difficulties that negatively affect the quality of their writing. This study aims to examine the common grammatical errors found in the writing of Indonesian EFL students through the perspectives of Contrastive Analysis and Error Analysis. This study employed a library research design by analyzing and synthesizing relevant books, scholarly journal articles, and previous studies. The findings reveal that the most frequent grammatical errors involve tense usage, subject–verb agreement, articles, prepositions, plural forms, and sentence structure. These errors are primarily attributed to first-language transfer, overgeneralization, incomplete rule application, limited grammatical competence, and structural differences between Indonesian and English. In conclusion, Contrastive Analysis and Error Analysis provide complementary frameworks for identifying the sources of grammatical errors and serve as a valuable basis for improving the writing accuracy of EFL learners. The findings are expected to provide useful insights for teachers, curriculum developers, and researchers in designing more effective EFL writing instruction.

Grammatical Error Patterns and Syntactic Processing Bottlenecks in L2 Arabic Oral Reading (Qirāʾah Jahriyyah)

Oral reading of unvowelized Arabic texts (qirāʾah jahriyyah / قراءة جهرية) requires the real-time integration of syntactic and morphological knowledge. Although previous research has documented general grammatical difficulties in second-language Arabic, the cognitive-processing mechanisms underlying breakdowns during live text vocalization remain underexplored. This qualitative case study employed Error Analysis to examine transcribed oral-reading performances on the diagnostic text Naṣāʾiḥ al-Ab wa Ijtihād al-Ibn among four focal participants in the Program Iman Specialization (Al-Program Al-Takhassusi) at STAI Ali Bin Abi Thalib Surabaya. The findings showed that grammatical errors clustered systematically around inflectional case assignment (iʿrāb / إعراب), construct-state formation (iḍāfah / إضافة), and complement realization (mafāʿīl / مفاعيل). The analysis further identified a Nominative Default Bias (Marfūʿāt Default / الانحياز الافتراضي للمرفوعات), whereby learners tended to produce nominative forms under cognitive overload, as well as a Declarative–Procedural Gap, in which their demonstrated mastery of grammatical rules in isolated ʿilm al-naḥw (علم النحو) exercises did not transfer to continuous oral reading. These findings indicate that oral-reading deviations arise primarily from real-time syntactic-processing bottlenecks rather than underlying grammatical-competence deficits. The study contributes to second-language Arabic acquisition research by distinguishing online processing failure from declarative grammatical knowledge and highlights the need to reorient Arabic instruction from static rule memorization toward speeded sentence-parsing exercises and targeted oral corrective feedback.

Cohesive Devices In English-Language Indonesian Online News: A Discourse Analysis Of The Jakarta Post Articles On The Iran Conflict

This study examines the use of cohesive devices in English-language opinion articles published in The Jakarta Post, Indonesia's premier English-language newspaper. Drawing on Halliday and Hasan's (1976) framework of cohesion in English, the research employs quantitative content analysis to investigate the frequency, distribution, and utilization of cohesive devices across a corpus of ten opinion articles concerning the Iran conflict, published between March and April 2026. The analysis reveals that reference (29.07%, n = 91) and lexical cohesion (29.07%, n = 91) constitute the dominant cohesive strategies, followed by conjunction (19.49%, n = 61), substitution (12.78%, n = 40), and ellipsis (9.58%, n = 30). Within the reference category, anaphoric reference emerges as the most frequently employed sub-type (15.97%), while repetition emerged as the dominant subtype of lexical cohesion. The distribution of cohesive devices indicates a clear preference for referential and lexical strategies in maintaining continuity across the selected articles. These findings contribute to discourse analysis by providing empirical evidence of cohesion patterns in Indonesian English-language journalism and offer pedagogical implications for EAP and ESP instruction.
