A Triangulated MCDM Framework for ESG–Open Innovation Readiness in Sustainable Business Ecosystems

Abstract

This research establishes a framework to evaluate how effectively financial institutions convert environmental, social, and governance (ESG) pressures into readiness for open innovation (EOIR). EOIR is conceptualized as a higher-order capability that encompasses environmental opportunity, social legitimacy, and governance discipline. This study employs a triangulated multi-criteria decision-making framework consisting of CRITIC, Shannon Entropy, and Fuzzy AHP weighting with MARCOS ranking, TOPSIS validation, and pillar-focused scenario analysis to evaluate ESG–open innovation readiness. Results inindicate the importance of governance practices, such as board independence, low controversies, and alignment with the Paris Agreement and environmental innovation. Data privacy outperforms representational social attributes. The MARCOS and TOPSIS rankings demonstrate a high degree of concordance; leaders maintain their stability across weighting philosophies, while mid-tier positions exhibit policy-sensitive mobility. Scenario analysis indicates a stable frontier, high top-10 overlap, and mid-teen rank shifts, highlighting actionable levers. The framework provides a transparent, reproducible multiple-criteria decision-making pipeline for EOIR measurement and clarifies important enablers, including credible governance, environmental technology alignment, and privacy-centric data governance, from a theoretical and practical perspective.

Global shipping networks are facing systemic shocks, including climate volatility, decarbonization pressure, geopolitical disruption, and supply-chain volatility. These pressures require port organizations to strengthen resilience-oriented governance while advancing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) implementation. Rather than measuring employee proficiency or port-level resilience outcomes, this study prioritizes ESG-related competencies considered important for port managerial and professional roles. We developed a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework informed by a one-round structured importance-rating survey completed by 44 retained managerial and professional respondents from Ningbo Zhoushan Port Group. A Multidimensional Optimization Model (MDOM) based on the Lagrange Multiplier Method (LMM) was used to combine respondent-derived and entropy-based weights under a stated optimization rule. TOPSIS was used for an illustrative comparison of three author-constructed hypothetical competency scenarios. Systemic risk foresight received the highest final weight among the 20 indicators. The study provides a respondent-prioritized competency framework and demonstrates how the prioritized indicators can inform illustrative decision-support scenarios for port managerial and professional roles.

Structured prioritization of stakeholder preferences in digital governance: a comparative AHP framework for public-sector decision alignment

This paper aims to examine how structured stakeholder prioritization can enhance alignment, transparency and legitimacy in digital governance for smart city policy contexts. It develops a comparative framework using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to systematically assess how diverse stakeholder groups prioritize strategic and operational objectives in public-sector decision-making. This study adopts a multistage research design combining cross-national benchmarking of 28 smart city cases with survey-based AHP estimation. Drawing on 423 stakeholder responses in South Korea, the framework quantifies pairwise priority judgments across 4 strategic domains – quality of life, sustainability, innovation and growth and city competitiveness – and 12 operational subfactors. The results reveal measurable convergence around quality of life and sustainability, alongside significant divergence between public authorities and nonpublic stakeholders regarding safety, social equity and governance structures. The structured AHP framework exposes legitimacy-sensitive priority gaps and clarifies trade-offs across competing policy objectives. The empirical data are based on Korean respondents and cross-sectional analysis, limiting full cross-cultural generalization and dynamic interpretation. Future research may extend the framework through longitudinal and multicountry comparative designs. The proposed model provides policymakers and urban planners with a transparent decision-support mechanism to diagnose alignment gaps, prioritize infrastructure investments and strengthen accountability in digital governance systems. This study highlights the importance of transparent and inclusive decision-making in digital governance. By comparing stakeholder priorities in smart city development, the framework helps policymakers identify perception gaps and better align policies with societal expectations, strengthening legitimacy, public trust and socially responsive urban governance. This study contributes to digital governance research by reframing AHP as a governance transparency and stakeholder-alignment tool rather than merely a technical evaluation method. By integrating structured prioritization with comparative benchmarking, it advances a systematic approach to institutional legitimacy and inclusive public-sector decision alignment in smart city governance.

The ESG-digital nexus: Integrating sustainability imperatives with digital transformation in Asian firms

Asian firms increasingly face a dual strategic requirement: they must accelerate digital transformation while meeting rising environmental, social and governance (ESG) expectations. This paper develops the ESG-digital nexus as a strategic management framework explaining how digital capabilities can strengthen ESG performance and how ESG objectives can discipline digital investment toward long-term value creation. Using an integrative conceptual synthesis informed by the resource-based view, dynamic capabilities theory and selected Asian sustainability contexts, the paper reframes digital transformation and ESG integration as mutually reinforcing organisational capabilities rather than separate compliance or technology agendas. The framework identifies three mechanisms: digitally enabled ESG measurement, behavioural embedding through digital institutional behavioural design and stakeholder-facing transparency. The illustrative evidence and maturity matrix suggest that firms with high digital and ESG maturity are better positioned to convert sustainability commitments into operational routines, financial resilience and reputational advantage. The paper contributes a practical quadrant model for diagnosing organisational maturity and for guiding staged managerial action in Asian firms operating under tightening sustainability reporting regimes.
