Amphiphilic PEG Multiblock Copolymers Form Highly Ordered Transient Network Hydrogels

Abstract

Amphiphilic PEG multiblock copolymers can be readily synthesized by polycondensation reactions. Their multiblock structure leads to the formation of hydrogels consisting of highly interconnected micelles. Here, we investigate as model systems copolyesters consisting of alternating hydrophobic alkyldicarboxylic acids (Cm) and hydrophilic polyethylene glycols (EGn). We investigate the structure of the formed micelles and hydrogels over a wide range of concentrations, temperatures, and block lengths using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), cryo-TEM, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and rheology. We find that the multiblock copolymers form hydrogels already at low concentrations. With increasing concentration, we observe for all copolymers the formation of a highly ordered body-centered cubic (BCC) phase and a crystalline lamellar phase. The increase of the alkyl and PEG chain lengths systematically increases the BCC unit cell size. We observe that the PEG-blocks significantly penetrate into the hydrophobic micellar cores, thereby increasing micellar exchange rates. This leads to the formation of transient networks with high mechanical moduli, which are of interest for self-healing, robotics and medical applications.

Nonionic Pyrene-Based Amphiphiles Forming Wormlike Micelles: Synthesis and Characterization

Wormlike micelles are elongated, flexible supramolecular assemblies whose dynamic structure and anisotropic morphology have attracted considerable interest as functional soft materials. The self-assembly of amphiphilic molecules into anisotropic supramolecular nanostructures is governed by a delicate balance between...

Tunable Sugar-Solanesol Block Copolymer Wormlike Micelles for Pickering-like Emulsions.

A general design framework for fully bio-based block copolymers that integrates structural organization with macroscopic function remains largely unexplored, despite extensive study of amphiphilic systems. Herein, we address this challenge by designing fully bio-based diblock copolymers (i.e., Glc6/7-b-Sol) comprising...

Heterogeneous collapse in thermoresponsive copolymer microgels varying molar composition

Understanding the internal architecture of copolymer microgels is crucial for establishing how nanoscale polymer organization controls their stimuli-responsive behavior. Here we focus on thermoresponsive P(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-N-isopropyl-methacrylamide), P(NIPAM-co-NIPMAM), microgels with varying mole fraction of...

Aqueous-Phase Polyelectrolyte Behavior of Hydroxypropyl Chitosan

Hydroxypropyl chitosan (HPCS) is a water-soluble, cationic derivative of chitosan whose combination of hydrophilic substituents and residual charged and hydrophobic groups creates a unique landscape of interactions in aqueous media. Despite growing interest in chitosan-based materials, the fundamental solution behavi...

Phase Behavior of Pentablock Terpolymers Differing in Molecular Architecture and Modified with a Block-Selective Oil

Thermoplastic elastomer gels constitute a valuable class of composition-tunable materials that are typically fabricated from styrenic ABA triblock copolymers (i) possessing a morphology with A-dispersions in a B-matrix and (ii) physically modified with a B-selective, low-volatility oil to controllably alter mechanica...
