Abstract

This study assessed the impacts of sea encroachment in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, Nigeria, using multi-temporal optical satellite imagery and the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) Digital Elevation Model (DEM). This study analyzed past and recent shoreline change trends, simulated elevation-based vulnerability to flooding, and predicted the potential effects of sea-level rise. Landsat images from 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2020, and 2025 were analyzed to identify the shoreline, and shoreline changes were calculated using the End Point Rate (EPR) and Linear Regression Rate (LRR) in the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS). Elevation-based vulnerability maps were modeled using the SRTM DEM, and future inundation was projected using sea-level rise data. Results showed that erosion was more severe along the Ilaje coastline, with over 70 percent of the shoreline retreating at different rates, while only small sections experienced accretion. The inundation model, assuming a conservative rise of 0.269 m, indicated that more than 555 km$^2$ of land could be submerged, and a 1m rise could flood over 650 km$^2$ by the year 2150, an event that would affect settlements such as Ayetoro, Ogogoro, and Gbeke Eke. These findings emphasize why Ilaje communities are at risk of land loss, displacement, and livelihood impacts. The analysis concludes that sea intrusion poses a significant threat to the coastal ecosystem in Ilaje. This study recommends integrating the coastal zone into planning efforts, restoring mangroves as natural barriers, adopting stricter measures to prevent unsustainable human activities, and maintaining ongoing geospatial monitoring as part of a sustainable strategy for change.

SATELLITE-BASED COMPARATIVE ASSESSMENT OF SHORELINE DYNAMICS USING DIGITAL SHORELINE ANALYSIS SYSTEM (DSAS) IN TERENGGANU AND JOHOR, PENINSULAR MALAYSIA

The current study aims to analyse long-term coastal processes along the coast of Terengganu and Johor in Peninsular Malaysia over a 34-year period (1990–2024) with the aim of comparing two quite different coastal systems that vary in geomorphological characteristics and level of anthropogenic alteration. The eight year...

Satellite-Based Assessment of Flood Inundation, Vegetation Damage, Channel Change and Environmental Impacts of the August 2026 Rasuwa Flood, Nepal Himalaya

The devastating flood event in northern Nepal that occurred in August 2026 brought significant modifications to the river channels, valley floors, vegetation, and sediments of the Bhotekoshi/Lhende Khola and Trishuli river corridors. The present study integrates a remote sensing, geographic information system (GIS), te...

Satellite-Based Framework for Detecting Seabed Dynamics from Shoreline Variability along Spit Coasts—A Pilot Study from the Hel Peninsula

This study presents a pilot, data-driven framework for detecting nearshore seabed dynamics based on shoreline variability derived from high-resolution satellite imagery, integrated with in situ bathymetric measurements along the Hel Peninsula in the southern Baltic Sea. The approach focuses on assessing whether satelli...

Comparison of Shoreline Determination Methods Using Multi-Sensor Data in Low-Relief Coastal Environments

Shoreline determination is fundamental to coastal research, spatial planning, and legal boundary delineation but remains challenging in low-relief coastal areas where small sea-level variations can produce substantial horizontal shoreline displacements. This study compares shoreline determination methods based on tide...

Algerian shoreline changes (1986–2024) monitored and assessed using remote sensing and GIS techniques

This paper assesses diachronic shoreline dynamics in Algeria. To achieve this, remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques were employed to analyse shoreline changes over the 38-year period from 1986 to 2024. Landsat mission satellite images were processed and analysed to extract the shoreline. Fo...
