Abstract

As the basic education curriculum reform in China goes on, there are contradictions in the teaching of English at the primary school level, including vivid teaching using old-fashioned teaching techniques, big classes with disparities in students' foundations, short lesson time, and absence of a language environment. The paper organizes the essential ideas of teaching English in primary schools, discusses how the disparities between teaching foreign language and teaching a second language affect Chinese primary schools, and provides an overview of the three mentioned characteristics of teaching and their reasons. To address these concerns, this paper will suggest three recommendations to improve teaching. To begin with, the teachers ought to incorporate the use of artificial intelligence and game approaches in the classroom to realize diversified teaching. Second, they are expected to practice individualised instruction through the theory of multiple intelligences and group cooperative learning and combine classroom, campus, and family resources to establish a multi-dimensional language environment. Besides, teacher innovation and professional growth are the two breakthroughs that can be used to address the existing challenges in teaching English at the primary schools. The profound path of AI technology and personalized teaching integration should also be analysed in the future research.
