TL;DR
Improving HRQOL in older adults living with multimorbidity requires integrated, person-centered approaches addressing social, psychological, environmental, and physical needs, with targeted interventions and policies to enhance well-being, equity, and care outcomes in this rapidly growing population.
Abstract
INTRODUCTION
Older adults with multimorbidity face complex challenges impacting health-related quality of life (HRQOL). A scoping review is essential to identify key determinants and interventions, thereby informing the development of equitable and evidence-based care strategies.
Aim
To identify and synthesize the multidimensional determinants of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in older adults with multimorbidity, examine how physical, psychological, social, and environmental factors influence HRQOL, evaluate interventions, and map research trends via bibliometric analysis.
Methods
This scoping review followed Arksey and O'Malley's framework, systematically searching three databases (Medline, Web of Science and Scopus) from February 2025 to April 2025. Except for review articles, no restrictions were placed on study design, geographic location, or publication period. Study quality was evaluated using PRISMA guidelines and JBI appraisal tools. Data were thematically analysed using the WHOQOL-BREF domains: physical, psychological, social, and environmental health. Bibliometric indicators and VOSviewer were used to visualize keyword co-occurrence networks.
Results
Key determinants of HRQOL among multimorbid older adults included social support, psychological health, environmental conditions, and physical functioning. Depression, isolation, low income, and multimorbidity burden negatively impacted HRQOL. EuroQol(EQ-5D) tools were most used. Interventions, including eHealth approaches, structured physical activity regimens, and integrated care models, improved mental and overall HRQOL, though effects on physical health were varied.
Conclusion
Improving HRQOL in older adults living with multimorbidity requires integrated, person-centered approaches addressing social, psychological, environmental, and physical needs, with targeted interventions and policies to enhance well-being, equity, and care outcomes in this rapidly growing population.
AIM: To investigate the factors predicting physical and mental health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in older adults with multimorbidity.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional, correlational survey. The study was conducted between May 2023 and June 2024. The participants consisted of a convenient sample of 110 communi...
