Helicenes are a class of structurally fascinating polycyclic aromatic molecules composed of ortho-fused aromatic rings, which adopt a screwed shape and exhibit helical chirality due to the steric repulsion between the two terminal rings. However, the catalytic enantioselective synthesis of helicenes, especially those containing more than one type of heteroaromatic ring, remains largely underexplored. In this work, we present a straightforward and efficient catalytic enantioselective method for synthesizing heterohelicenes bearing both furan and pyrrole rings. By leveraging a chiral phosphoric acid catalyst, the asymmetric oxidative formal [3 + 2] cycloaddition reactions between polycyclic indoles and quinone esters afforded a variety of hetero[7]/[6]helicenes with good to high yields and enantioselectivities. Extensive control experiments suggest that the reaction proceeds via a sequential enantioselective indole C-3 arylation, hydroquinone oxidation, and intramolecular 1,6-addition process, with the initial addition step serving as the enantio-determining step. DFT calculations were performed to elucidate the origin of the enantioselectivity of this reaction, as well as the role of the hydroquinone additive in accelerating the cyclization step. These heterohelicenes exhibit high configurational stability, diverse potential for derivatization, as well as promising photophysical and chiroptical properties, which underscore the value of this methodology.
Heterohelicenes combine helical chirality with tunable electronic properties, making them attractive for applications in chiral materials and optoelectronics. However, their enantioselective synthesis, particularly for five-membered heterohelicenes, remains a long-standing challenge owing to the inherent synthetic di...
Semisaturated heterocycles are privileged scaffolds in natural products and pharmaceuticals, yet a general and versatile catalytic strategy to access these chiral architectures remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we report a unified synthetic platform utilizing the earth-abundant cobalt coupled with a chiral N,N'-d...
The P-chiral phosphine AntPhos was found to be the ligand of choice for nickel-catalyzed intramolecular reductive coupling reactions of 5-amino substituted 2,4-dienoates bearing a tethered aldehyde. This approach to heterocyclic compounds has little precedent in the literature; it provides, inter alia, ready access to...

The enantioselective catalytic construction of structurally sophisticated helicenes integrating both helical and central chirality remains a formidable challenge, and organocatalytic strategies for helicene synthesis are still severely underexplored compared with transition-metal catalysis. Benefiting from the inhere...
The catalytic enantioselective synthesis of inherently chiral macrocycles remains a major challenge, particularly through non-cyclization strategies. Herein, we report a chiral phosphoric acid (CPA)-catalyzed remote desymmetrization of tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazines, enabling access to inherently chiral heteracalix[...

Bicyclo[1.1.0]butanes (BCBs) are a distinctive class of strained small-ring carbocycles of growing importance in synthetic and medicinal chemistry. However, the enantioselective synthesis of polysubstituted BCBs remains a largely unsolved challenge. Herein, we report a general chemical platform for the stereoselective...
