Abstract
Drawing on 660 Web-of-Science articles, this study traces the 15-year trajectory of corpus pragmatics, which has grown into an increasingly influential field. Co-citation analysis and network mapping reveal that
Journal of Pragmatics
has remained the most influential journal throughout, while the impact of other pragmatics- and corpus-related journals has also significantly increased over time. Meanwhile, foundational works continue to be frequently cited, but more recent contributions highlight the emergence of new research themes. Besides, a diachronic keyword analysis also demonstrates growing interest in topics such as new types of speech acts (e.g., self-denigration and self-praise), pragmatic competence, and subfields like historical, diachronic, and variational pragmatics. The study concludes by urging richer linguistic diversity, multimodal annotation and deeper integration of emerging technologies to propel the field forward. Overall, the study provides a comprehensive overview of the field’s evolution and offers valuable insights for future research in corpus pragmatics.
This article, which presents a bibliometric analysis of discourse analysis research in Türkiye, systematically evaluates nearly 50 years of production in the field using the Scopus database. The findings of the research indicate that discourse studies in Türkiye are predominantly concentrated in the social sciences and humanities. The most prominent thematic concentrations are on political discourse, nationalism, populism, gender, and European Union debates. While Critical Discourse Analysis stands out as the dominant methodological approach, innovative techniques such as multimodal analysis or corpus-based methods appear to be insufficient. An examination of language preferences reveals that English is overwhelmingly preferred for global visibility, while Turkish remains an important local production language. Institutional performance analyses reveal that Bilkent, Koç, and Boğaziçi universities hold leading positions in terms of both publication volume and citation impact. An examination of collaborative networks among authors reveals that individuals such as Deniz Zeyrek and Bedrettin Yazan play a central role. However, it is also true that a significant portion of the 2,883 authors remain outside these collaborative networks. International collaborations and citation rates demonstrate that the integration of researchers in Türkiye with the global academy is becoming increasingly stronger, but this interaction can be further enhanced. The study also points to significant gaps in the existing literature. The limited number of discourse studies in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, the inadequate research in contemporary contexts such as digital platforms and artificial intelligence, and the limited methodological diversity are among the most prominent shortcomings.
Before the late nineteenth century, linguistic research relied heavily on dictionaries, but by the end of the century two European scholars, G. Wenker and J. Gillieron, revolutionized linguistic methodology with two very different approaches to data collection in Europe. One hundred years later, just a few years before the founding of Masyarakat Linguistik Indonesia, two other European linguists, G. Diffloth and B. Nothofer, began their fieldwork projects in Island Southeast Asia. Their methodologies—connected yet differing in some details—have been explained in print and online sources. This essay focuses on linguistic fieldwork and research methodology based on empirical and inductive principles by reviewing the methods of Diffloth and Nothofer and comparing their approaches to those procedures used in a few recent linguistic studies of local languages in Malaysia and Indonesia. The underlying importance of studying the social history and the geography of the language communities involved in research projects as well as the need for cooperative interaction between researchers and language informants are the only basis for credible linguistic analysis. As hundreds of regional languages in Southeast Asia are threatened with obsolescence, linguists must not only document these languages but explore modes of cooperation with communities seeking to maintain their heritage languages from generation to generation. Computer programs such as ELAN can be used not only to document endangered languages but to revitalize them as well. As linguists, we need to rethink our procedures and enhance our interactions with the language communities of these islands.

Through the quantification of frequency, existing corpus-based quantitative studies on grammaticalization offer a new direction for empirical investigation. However, most existing studies focus on general frequencies, failing to elucidate the relationship between frequency and grammaticalization. The proposition of critical frequency can reveal the relationship between frequency and grammaticalization and confirm the “threshold” that triggers grammaticalization. The present study explores the critical frequency (i.e., synchronic intensity and diachronic thickness) of future be going to and clarifies the relationship between its critical frequency and general frequency based on the corpora of EEBO, Google Books and COCA. The corpora are large enough for tracing the development of the fully grammaticalized be going to. Furthermore, the results retrieved from them can be mutually verified, thereby ensuring the validity of the present study. Quantitative analyses, including Chi-square test and linear regression test, are performed on the retrieved results. The findings include: (1) the diachronic thickness of future be going to lasts for 110 years (i.e., 1580–1690) and the synchronic intensity amounts to 0.81 per million words; (2) The critical frequency and the general frequency of future be going to are closely correlated. The present study confirms the threshold for triggering the grammaticalization of future be going to and elucidates the relationship between its critical frequency and general frequency. This study provides insights for future quantitative research on grammaticalization.
—In December 2023, Oxford English Dictionary selected rizz as the Word of the Year . This study examines the relationship between conceptual meanings of rizz and its source word charisma through constructing semantic networks. Based on authentic corpus data from COCA, NOW, and English-language social media platforms, semantic networks are constructed with ROST-CM6. The findings indicate that while charisma is broadly used across different contexts to describe intrinsic personal magnetism, often associated with leadership, rizz is more narrowly referred to attractiveness from romantic partners. Moreover, this study reveals that the rapid diffusion of rizz is attributed to its viral circulation on social media, broadcast by mainstream media, celebrity endorsement, and simplicity. In conclusion, this study demonstrates how semantic network analysis can elucidate the evolving meanings of neologisms and provide insights into the mechanisms underlying their dissemination.

Lexical bundles are repeated multi-word units that serve to organise information and convey disciplinary knowledge in academic writing. The use of lexical bundles in the conclusion sections of research papers, particularly across diverse fields, remains underexplored. Four-word lexical bundles in the 400 concluding paragraphs of international journal articles published in 2025 across the four fields of Applied Linguistics, Sociology, Biology, and Electrical & Electronic Engineering have been studied in this paper. AntConc was used to obtain a corpus-based list of lexical bundles and then analysed their structure and function. Lexical bundles are used widely in all fields, but their distribution and function vary among different areas of study. Soft disciplines are more likely to have interpretative and evaluative parts in the research significance and theoretical implications sections of their studies; hard sciences focus on empirical results, research outcomes and future development plans. Therefore, the above results show that lexical bundles contain disciplinary conventions and ways of knowing, and they can offer some references for research on academic writing and discipline-specific writing instruction.

The new monograph by R. Mudrochová presents a phenomenon that has been largely neglected in systemic linguistic studies. However, the strong discursive visibility of lexical blends has led the author to compile a corpus of 286 lexical items, which were subjected to a detailed multi stage analysis (Mudrochová, 2025: 94). The author also demonstrates that, in many cases, these lexical creations serve as substitutes for Anglicisms (Mudrochová, 2022). Consequently, the publication Les amalgames lexicaux en français contemporain. Analyses, contextes, emplois (245 pages), published in Prague by Karolinum, represents a major contribution to this field. It argues that the blend word (mot-valise) has become the most productive blending process in contemporary French, both quantitatively and discursively. The author’s ambitious aim is to fill a gap in systemic theoretical studies devoted to lexical blends and to restore their full scientific legitimacy. From a methodological perspective, the study relies on digital resources rich in lexical blends.
