The TRANSCEND framework, a dual-route neurological model that begins with concept retrieval and leads to either verbal or AAC output, provides a foundation for future research that teases apart the neural underpinnings of motor, speech, and language aspects of AAC use.
Abstract
Purpose Research has shown that augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) has the potential to function not only as a compensatory communicative strategy, but also as a tool to facilitate language recovery for people with aphasia. However, much work remains in order to understand the brain changes associated with AAC-driven recovery. The purpose of this article is to highlight the need for neurological research on high-technology AAC use, and to advance that research agenda by proposing the Transformation of Representation Across Neurocognitive Systems for Concept to External Navigation and Display (TRANSCEND) framework, a testable model of language production for people with aphasia who use AAC. We also argue for fNIRS as a promising neuroimaging tool that offers the advantage of allowing ecologically valid AAC use during experimental tasks. Conclusion The TRANSCEND framework, a dual-route neurological model that begins with concept retrieval and leads to either verbal or AAC output, provides a foundation for future research that teases apart the neural underpinnings of motor, speech, and language aspects of AAC use.
Health and therapeutic applications impose stringent requirements on the analysis of human nonverbal behavior and the generation of behavior for socially interactive agents (SIAs): both must be not only natural-looking but also clinically appropriate, explainable, and safe. Current approaches fall short on both sides:...

Autism intervention systems remain organized around observable behavior, reflecting frameworks established before network neuroscience reshaped how the condition is understood. Meanwhile, adult outcomes in employment, independent living, and social participation remain poor, and intervention trials have rarely followed...

Abstract Functional neurological disorder (FND) is increasingly conceptualized as a disorder of network-level dysfunction involving altered salience processing, impaired motor intention–execution coupling and disrupted self-agency. Despite advances in multi-disciplinary rehabilitation, a proportion of individuals exper...

Convergent behavioural, computational and neural evidence obtained across rodents, non-human primates and humans indicates that self-evaluations arise from structured transformations of uncertainty, which supports metacognitive control at multiple timescales.

Although language might have evolved in a conversational setting, neural language processing is rarely studied in this setting. It is also important to delineate the roles of networks interacting with the language network, such as the default mode network and networks subserving social cognition or cognitive control. W...
