COMPARATIVE LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF THE TYPES AND FUNCTIONS OF REPETITION IN RUSSIAN AND ARABIC

2026 · BULLETIN OF CHECHEN STATE PEDAGOGICAL UNIVERSITY Series 1. Humane and Social Sciences · 0 citations

Abstract

Abstract. The article is devoted to a comprehensive analysis of the phenomenon of repetition in the Russian and Arabic languages, viewed from the perspective of its structural organization and functional-communicative potential. The relevance of the topic is determined by the fact that repetition functions not merely as a stylistic device, but as a fundamental mechanism of text formation, ensuring semantic cohesion, compositional integrity, and expressive intensity of utterance. The multi-level nature of repetition-lexical, morphemic, syntactic, and semantic-requires systematic interpretation within contemporary linguistics, particularly in the context of cross-linguistic comparison with the Arabic rhetorical tradition. The aim of the article is to conduct a comprehensive study of repetition in the Russian language by identifying its stylistic, semantic, and communicative functions, as well as to compare the ways in which repetition is realized in Russian and Arabic. The objectives of the study include clarifying the theoretical content of the concept of “repetition” based on modern linguistic approaches; classifying its main types; analyzing their functioning in literary and academic discourse; and identifying similarities and differences in their use in the two languages under consideration. The methodological framework is based on a comparative approach incorporating elements of structural-semantic, contextual, and discourse analysis. The research material consists of texts of various genres, which makes it possible to trace both variable and stable patterns in the use of repetition. The findings demonstrate that repetition performs text-forming, expressive, and argumentative functions, while its realization in Russian and Arabic reveals both typological similarities and culturally conditioned differences. The conclusions contribute to a deeper understanding of the stylistic potential of repetition and confirm its significance for text theory, comparative stylistics, and intercultural communication.

Discursive Functions of Lexical Repetition in Tajik and English

The given article dwells on the discursive functions of lexical repetition in Tajik and English from a comparative perspective. The relevance of this study stems from the need to identify universal and specific mechanisms of text organization across languages. The aim of the study is to analyze the role of lexical repetition as a means of cohesion, expressivity, and pragmatic impact in discourse. The study utilizes methods of comparative-contrastive, functional-stylistic, and discourse analysis. The study’s material includes literary and journalistic texts in Tajik and English. The results of the study demonstrate that lexical repetition performs a number of universal functions, including ensuring text coherence, highlighting key meanings, and enhancing expressiveness. At the same time, nationally specific features are identified: in Tajik, repetition is often emotionally expressive, whereas in English, it is more structured and subject to rhetorical norms.

Linguistic-semantic modeling of translation transformations in the context of macro-typological asymmetry of the Russian and Arabic languages

This paper is focused on the problem of overcoming macro-typological asymmetry in translating texts from Russian into Arabic and from Arabic into Russian. The paper is dedicated to a comprehensive study of the mechanisms of cross-linguistic meaning transfer in cases where direct transfer (transcoding) proves impossible due to structural interference. Particular attention is paid to the deconstruction of complex verbal phrases, metaphorical expressions, and culture-specific vocabulary in the absence of direct dictionary equivalents. The aim of the research is to develop a comprehensive formal model of linguistic-semantic and syntactic transformations for the Russian-Arabic language pair based on dependency grammars, utilizing the empirical data of parallel text corpora. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that, for the first time, the mechanisms for overcoming lexical-syntactic lacunarity between typologically distant languages (such as demetaphorisation, cross-part-of-speech transposition (recategorization), and syntactic reconfiguration) are presented in the form of computable syntactic dependency trees based on a parallel macrotext. Furthermore, the applied potential of Russian-Arabic parallel arrays is substantiated for the first time by applying the principle of corpus triangulation to identify translation patterns. As a result, the key text adaptation strategies (nominal, semantic, and explicative) were identified and systematized. The results obtained showed that achieving pragmatic equivalence is algorithmically impossible without the structural expansion or reduction of the source graph, and that the use of corpora safeguards the translator from subjective deviations and the phenomenon of "translationese".

The characteristics of Russian and English terminological systems in the field of “Foreign Language Teaching”

This study examines the structural, semantic, and functional characteristics of Russian and English terminology in the field of "Foreign Language Teaching" in terms of their interlingual equivalence. The paper examines the mechanisms of terminological unit formation, their systemic relationships, and the problems of polysemy, synonymy, and borrowing characteristic of modern linguodidactic terminology. Particular attention is paid to a comparative analysis of definitions of key concepts in Russian-language and English-language lexicographic sources, as well as the specifics of their functioning in the scientific discourse of Russian as a foreign language, which is driven by the need to standardize terminology for effective international professional communication. Furthermore, the study focuses on differences in the structural organization of terms, the degree of their terminological development in each linguistic tradition, and the influence of extralinguistic factors on the formation of non-equivalent units. The methodological basis of the study includes methods of corpus, comparative-contrastive and structural-semantic analysis, as well as elements of quantitative data processing to identify frequent terminological units. The scientific novelty of this work lies in its comprehensive comparative analysis of Russian and English terminology based on contemporary scientific periodicals on Russian as a Foreign Language (RFL), which allowed us to identify not only formal but also conceptual differences in the semantics of terms, stemming from differences in scientific traditions. The study identified three types of interlingual correspondences (full equivalents, partial analogs, and non-equivalent units), defined dominant structural models of Russian terminology (primarily two-component phrases), and developed a model for a bilingual dictionary entry with an extensive linguacultural commentary. This provides a practical basis for compiling a specialized glossary, essential for undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and practicing teachers in the field of teaching Russian as a foreign language, as well as for preparing scientific publications in English.

Structuralism and the arabic grammatical tradition: what actually changed, and what did not

This essay aimed to critically examine the widely held claim in contemporary Arabic linguistic research that European structuralism decisively transformed the study of Arabic grammar. To this end, a qualitative, analytical, and historical-comparative approach was adopted, based on a critical analysis of primary sources of European structuralism—primarily the works of Ferdinand de Saussure, Leonard Bloomfield, and Roman Jakobson—as well as the classical and modern Arabic grammatical tradition, represented by Sibawayh's Al-Kitāb and Tammam Hassan's work on the theory of convergence of clues (taḍāfur al-qarāʾin). The analysis was supplemented by recent scholarly literature on Arabic linguistics, structuralism, functionalism, and cognitive linguistics. The results showed that structuralism's main contribution lay not in offering new knowledge about the Arabic language, but in introducing a different epistemological criterion for evaluating the validity of linguistic explanations. This approach allowed for the identification of limitations in the classical theory of ʿāmil, although Hassan's alternative proposal also failed to conclusively resolve these difficulties when subjected to the same level of critical analysis. It is concluded that the influence of structuralism on Arabic grammar has been more methodological than theoretical, and that much of the existing literature consists of pedagogical reinterpretations rather than empirically verified developments

Interplicate final concepts in the linguistic worldview (based on the Russian and Chuvash languages)

The article is devoted to a comparative study of such interplicate final concepts as PURPOSE, CONDITION, and CONCESSION. The purpose of the work is to identify the features of the representation of the concepts of PURPOSE, CONDITION, and CONCESSION in Russian and Chuvash linguistic worldviews. The scientific novelty of this work lies in the fact that it is the first to identify the dynamics of finality as a cognitive interface between the subject of cognition and objective reality, as a marker structure of the subject’s perception of causal relationships. The article examines speech planning as a dynamic process in which the speaker takes into account internal and external conditions that shape their communicative goals. Since the speaker is not free to choose their utterance, they operate within a field of numerous constraints and consciously construct a path to achieve their goal, resulting in various semantic modifications in their speech. The study found that external and internal conditions determine the speaker’s communicative goals, and if they cannot be achieved, a tactical retreat (concession) occurs. Interplicate concepts of PURPOSE, CONDITION, and CONCESSION are an integral cognitive tool for interacting with the objective world, allowing us to operate not only with actual, but also with potential and alternative possibilities. The forms and types of representatives of these concepts in different linguistic worldviews are historically and culturally conditioned.
