Abstract

A series of bottlebrush polymers was rationally synthesized using norbornene-functionalized polylactide (NB-PLA), polycaprolactone (NB-PCL), and quaternized poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (NB-QPDM) via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). These polymeric additives enabled the simultaneous improvement of toughness and antibacterial activity in PLA blends. Incorporating 10 wt % of P34, which consists of NB-PLA, NB-PCL, and NB-QPDM with backbone degrees of polymerization of 6, 34, and 4, respectively, led to a significant increase in tensile toughness while maintaining the tensile strength and Young's modulus comparable to neat PLA. This enhancement could be ascribed to the combined effects of a dispersed toughening phase and a weak physical network structure. Furthermore, the PLA blend containing P34 exhibited outstanding antibacterial efficacy of 99.5% against E. coli, which originated from the presence of a quaternary ammonium group.

Synergistic Optimization of Mechanical and Tribological Properties of Polyurethane through Chain Extender Regulation

Developing polyurethane (PU) elastomers that simultaneously combine high strength, toughness, and wear resistance remains challenging. Here, PU elastomers were prepared from polycarbonate diol and hexamethylene diisocyanate using mixtures of N,N′-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)oxamide (BHO), a hydroxyl-functional chain extender,...

High-Performance Polylactide Vitrimers via Polyol-Assisted Network Engineering through Reactive Blending

Polylactide (PLA) is a promising biobased and biodegradable polymer, but its limited heat resistance and mechanical performance hinder broader engineering applications. Herein, high-strength and reprocessable PLA vitrimers were prepared through a facile reactive blending strategy. A multifunctional polyol, bis(2-hydr...

Epoxy chain extender compatibilized poly(lactic acid)/polyoxymethylene blends: Improved crystallization, enhanced heat resistance and toughness for three-dimensional printing.

Bio-based and biodegradable poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is severely limited in three-dimensional (3D) printing due to its inherent brittleness, poor heat resistance, and slow crystallization rate. In this study, PLA/polyoxymethylene (POM) composites were prepared via one-step melt blending with an epoxy-functionalized olig...

Preparation and reinforcement of polylactic acid/ nanofibrillated cellulose/ glycidyl methacrylate composites

Using polylactic acid (PLA) and nanocellulose (NFC) as raw materials, and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) as the modifier, the PLA/NFC-GMA composite was prepared by solution blending. The addition of GMA effectively improved the dispersion of NFC in PLA, with NFC being grafted onto the PLA molecular chain through a reactio...
