What are the best sources of protein? Introducing the BPI Score

Abstract

The question, “What are the best sources of protein?” is complicated by the significant hidden health and environmental costs associated with many popular options. Existing food rating systems, such as nutritional traffic lights and carbon footprint labels, are valuable but often unidimensional. This narrow focus can conceal critical trade-offs and mislead consumers by failing to present a holistic picture. This perspective paper introduces the BPI Score, a new, multidimensional rating system designed to provide a more comprehensive answer. The goal is not necessarily to create another front-of-package label, but to foster a new literacy that empowers consumers, policymakers, and organizations to make more informed decisions. The initial version (V1) of the BPI Score was used to evaluate 20 high-protein products across two primary categories: people and planet. The Planet Score assesses environmental impact using data on GHG emissions, water pollution, and resource use. The People Score considers health factors like sodium and saturated fat content alongside accessibility metrics such as affordability and availability. A clear disparity emerged between plant-based and animal-based proteins. Tofu emerged as the highest-scoring product, while cheddar cheese ranked last. The top quintile of products consisted solely of plant-based proteins, while the bottom quintile was composed entirely of animal-based proteins. While acknowledging the limitations of this first iteration, the score provides a robust foundation for a more nuanced conversation. Ultimately, beyond the spreadsheets and scores, lies a fundamental reckoning: our protein choice is a referendum on the compassion we are willing to show to the planet and to future generations.

Beyond Nutrient Profiling: Strengths, Limitations, and Emerging Challenges for Nutri-Score and Related Front-of-Pack Labeling Systems

Front-of-pack nutrition labeling systems have become important tools for improving consumer understanding of nutritional information and supporting healthier food choices. Among these systems, Nutri-Score has emerged as one of the most widely implemented nutrient profiling models in Europe. Based on the Food Standards Agency Nutrient Profiling System, Nutri-Score summarizes selected nutritional characteristics of foods through a simplified five-level color-coded scale. A growing body of evidence indicates that Nutri-Score improves consumers’ ability to compare products, supports healthier purchasing decisions, and may encourage product reformulation. Epidemiological studies have reported associations between dietary patterns characterized by less favorable nutrient profile scores and increased risks of chronic diseases and mortality. Despite these strengths, important scientific and conceptual questions remain. This review examines the principles of nutrient profiling and assesses how effectively food quality can be represented by a limited set of nutritional criteria. Particular attention is given to nutrient reductionism, the use of the standardized 100 g reference, food matrix effects, the relationship between nutrient profiling and food processing, the influence of hedonic drivers and health claims on consumer behavior, and the growing importance of environmental contaminants as dimensions of food quality not captured by current algorithms. Future food evaluation systems may benefit from integrating complementary information related to food structure, processing characteristics, dietary context, and emerging insights from systems nutrition.

Protein adequacy is not protein optimality: a call to action in response to the new dietary guidelines for Americans

This paper argues that minimum protein adequacy should not be conflated with protein optimality in the interpretation and application of the 2025–2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Although the updated guidelines provide practical, food-based protein messaging for the general public, their population-level framing may be oversimplified when translated into clinical, community, and institutional practice. This perspective distinguishes protein adequacy as the minimum intake needed to prevent deficiency in most healthy adults from protein optimization as the individualized use of protein amount, distribution, and food quality to support functional, body-composition, metabolic, and clinical outcomes. Evidence supporting higher protein intakes is reviewed with attention to the limits of nitrogen balance-derived recommendations, the public health context of obesity and chronic disease, and the population-specific nature of benefits observed in weight management, aging, illness, and physically active groups. The paper further examines how simplified public messaging may obscure important considerations, including per-meal distribution, essential amino acid quality, saturated fat exposure, energy intake, food access, and clinical status. It concludes that Registered Dietitian Nutritionists play a critical role in translating national guidance into safe, evidence-informed, and context-specific practice. A call to action is presented for the profession to strengthen education, implementation, research engagement, and policy advocacy so that protein guidance is applied with scientific nuance rather than as a one-size-fits-all prescription.

Developing a novel conceptual model of how food and drink tax policy impacts on consumption, health, environmental and economic outcomes.

BACKGROUND While food taxes are proposed to promote healthier dietary choices and mitigate diet-related diseases, addressing rising UK obesity requires navigating a highly complex web of causal mechanisms. Economic evaluations of these interventions often lack a documented understanding of this systemic complexity. To bridge this gap, this study aims to comprehensively map the system by identifying the specific components affected, the causal pathways (mechanisms), and the individual and system-level factors (context) influencing the ultimate impact of food taxes. METHODS A diagrammatic representation of the conceptual model was developed through an iterative process. We first undertook a synthesis of reviews of food taxes and a rapid review of economic evaluations of food and drink taxes. The research team synthesised these results to describe mechanisms and outcomes for inclusion in the conceptual model. Secondly, the conceptual model was validated and revised according to feedback from 14 stakeholders across academia, policy, and third sector organisations. RESULTS Our final conceptual model illustrates system components which were grouped into eight sub-systems including policy infrastructure, industry behaviour, consumer behaviour, household expenditure, nutrition outcomes, health outcomes, environmental outcomes, and macroeconomic outcomes. Food taxes will influence consumption through price changes impacting purchases of taxed food and other purchases resulting in changes to consumption. Industry may modify the effects by absorbing the tax burden, marketing and product development and reformulation. We identify health, macroeconomic and environmental outcomes linked to food, and explore complex feedback loops linking health and macroeconomic performance to household finances further modifying food purchasing. We identify individual and contextual factors that modify these mechanisms. CONCLUSIONS When studying the impacts of food and drinks taxes, researchers should consider the mechanisms by which individuals and industry can modify the effects of food taxes, and the extent to which these actions can be anticipated. System-wide factors can be documented so that the modelled evidence can be interpreted considering these factors even if they are not explicitly modelled. The conceptual model v3.0 remains dynamic and can be updated as evidence and perspectives on the food tax policy system develop over time.

Artificial intelligence in nutritional health: sustainable consumers’ right to quality of life with special reference to youth

Background Maintaining optimal youth nutritional health is an urgent socio-economic imperative that underpins long-term human productivity and rights-based development. However, modern youth cohorts face unique dietary threats caused by the widespread availability of ultra-processed foods, targeted digital marketing, and complex food labeling protocols. Although Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents innovative avenues for personalized dietary profiling, existing systems remain largely technocentric and detached from statutory frameworks or behavioral realities. Objective This study bridges this interdisciplinary divide by evaluating a rights-based, technology-driven framework to improve youth nutritional health. It aims to: (1) empirically evaluate the “Knowledge-Attitude-Practice” (KAP) gap linking statutory consumer rights to real-world eating habits; (2) present the engineering design of a non-commercial Progressive Web Application (PWA) built to translate legal safeguards into daily behavioral changes; and (3) triangulate these findings using data from youth surveys and expert legal and nutritional panels. Methods Using a cross-sectional approach based on non-parametric power constraints, a validated survey instrument was completed by a target sample of Indian youth (n = 354, aged 15–25 years). Concurrently, data matrices were compiled from regional legal experts (n = 12) and public nutrition professionals (n = 12) to cross-verify structural bottlenecks. Group variances, demographic dependencies, and rank associations were analyzed using robust non-parametric tests, including One-Way ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis (H), Welch’s t-test, and Kendall’s Tau (τ) correlation coefficients. Results Inferential analysis revealed unexpected demographic trends: undergraduate status predicted significantly higher FSSAI safety awareness than post-graduate status (p = 0.0037), while subjective health ratings exhibited a non-linear relationship with household income (p = 0.0004), peaking in the lower-middle financial tier. Crucially, rank correlation testing revealed that the relationship between statutory knowledge and actual dietary actions is functionally non-existent (τ = −0.001). This near-zero correlation provides clear empirical proof of a pronounced Knowledge-Action Gap, confirming that passive legal literacy fails to influence food selection in modern environments. Conclusion By framing automated behavioral interventions within the constitutional protections of Article 21 of the Constitution of India and the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, this study shows how the open-access PWA (nutrition-zb.pages.dev) can bridge this behavioral gap. This shifts the focus of consumer health informatics from basic self-tracking to a rights-based, systemic public health intervention.

Food, Health, and Economy: A Perspective from Potters of East Champaran, Bihar

A unique culinary tradition that concentrates on the mass consumption of non-vegetarian food, commonly known as “Ahuna” in Champaran Bihar.” “Ahuna,” offers economic benefits that affect traditional pottery practitioners, particularly the Kumhars. The “Ahuna” is recognized by “Champaran Meat House,” and has proliferated across India. This paper analyses earthen vessels as a nexus among food, health, and economy using a case study from East Champaran incorporating Kumhar’s perspective. It is based on primary data, including interviews, questionnaires, and observations from East Champaran, Bihar, India.
