From one tree to the canopy: an evolutionary design trajectory for tethered robotics in forest environments

Abstract

Forest robotics has largely evolved along a ground-first and flight-dominant trajectory, treating the canopy as a region to observe or briefly access rather than a habitat to inhabit. In this Perspective, we propose an alternative canopy-first framework in which robots operate through anchoring, suspension, and tension-mediated interaction with the environment. We trace the progression from ground and aerial systems to perching mechanisms, identifying their shared limitation as transient canopy interaction. Tether-based robots instead enable sustained presence by transforming branches into structural supports. Within this context, TreeSpider is presented as an early canopy-innate morphology. We argue that such systems point toward a broader class of structure-innate robotics, where behavior emerges through physical coupling with the environment rather than continuous free-space mobility.

When Obstacles Bend: Modeling Vegetation Deformation in the context of Field Robotics

Autonomous robots operating in natural environments must often interact with vegetation rather than simply avoid it. In this context, traversability is typically defined from the robot's perspective, by measuring how a specific platform responds when moving through the environment. While practical, this viewpoint entan...

Co-design of trajectory and morphology for a vertical jump-climbing robot

Animals such as squirrels and even bears have adapted to rapidly climb up trees and other complex vertical terrain, but achieving comparable agility has been a challenge for climbing robots. Existing robots often use walking gaits and move conservatively to stay in contact with the surface, which limits the range of dy...

A transformable tethered aerial platform for robot-environment interactions

Improving the adaptability and versatility of micro aerial robots is crucial for expanding their application range. In this paper, we present a transformable tethered aerial platform composed of two bicopters tethered together with a cable, which is capable of mid-air transitions and robot-environment physical interact...

Planning Trajectories that Bounce: Reflection Classes for Collision-Tolerant Robots

Robot navigation methods tend to avoid contact, and consequently search for collision-free trajectories. For robots with high inertia and limited maneuverability, however, avoiding contact can require substantial steering effort and time, even when interactions with surrounding surfaces could be safely exploited. In th...

Hexapod Locomotion Across Structured and Unstructured Terrains: A Data‐Driven Review of Modeling, Control, and Validation

The design of a hexapod is complex and requires integration between kinematic models, control systems, and sensing. Existing literature has reviewed these sub‐systems in isolation. Since 2021, there has been no review of the field despite significant advancements in soft soil, lunar traversal, and artificial intellig...

Towards Path-Creative Navigation: Robot Navigation through Embodied Interaction

Autonomous navigation in cluttered and constrained environments typically assumes a fixed environment and searches only for paths within existing free space. However, a route can be blocked by an articulated structure, a movable object, or a pedestrian, and reaching the goal may therefore require appropriate embodied i...
