Abstract

In scenarios involving multi-source asynchronous data acquisition, point cloud registration is often constrained by limited overlap, geometric information loss due to occlusion, noise, non-uniform sampling, repetitive structures, and discrepancies between sensing sources. This survey focuses on rigid point cloud registration, first clarifying the key elements defining the problem, including data conditions, task formulations, and evaluation criteria. It then reviews traditional geometric methods, analyzing how they construct local objectives, establish correspondence criteria, and ensure global consistency. The article also explores learning-based methods from various perspectives, highlighting representation learning, overlap modeling, relational reasoning, knowledge transfer, and integration into complete reconstruction systems. Furthermore, it outlines the applications of pairwise registration outputs in techniques such as pose-graph optimization, surface fusion, NeRF, and 3D Gaussian Splatting. Finally, the survey discusses unresolved challenges regarding reliability, generalization, efficiency, and system integration..

Spectral Consistency-Guided Multiview Point Cloud Registration for Low-Overlap Scenes

Multiview point cloud registration is particularly challenging in low-overlap scenes, where reliable correspondences are limited and incorrect pairwise transformations can affect global pose estimation. In addition, registering all scan pairs is computationally expensive because many pairs provide weak geometric inform...

Geometry-Constrained Bidirectional Point Cloud Registration for Thin, Sheet-Like Heritage Artifacts

Non-contact three-dimensional reconstruction of thin, sheet-like heritage artifacts poses significant geometric and registration challenges. Due to their fragility, these artifacts cannot be suspended or equipped with artificial markers, necessitating independent acquisition of their front and back surfaces. Subsequent...

DMM-Align: Closed-Loop Optimization for 2D-3D Registration with Dual-Role Diffusion

2D-3D registration remains brittle in challenging scenarios such as low overlap, occlusion, repetitive structures, and severe cross-modal ambiguity. A key reason is that existing methods improve representation learning, correspondence estimation, or pose computation in isolation, while the dominant failure mode is inhe...

Dual-monocular structured light 3D reconstruction based on multi-constraint feature matching

Occlusion and reflection phenomena in complex workpieces often cause phase information loss and point cloud ‘voids’ in structured light 3D measurement. While dual-monocular systems can mitigate this issue through complementary viewing angles, they face the core challenge of point cloud misalignment between subsystems....
