Parkinson's Disease Mechanisms and Treatments

Abstract

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder and a growing global public health concern, affecting over 8.5 million people in 2019, with projections exceeding 25 million by 2050. Diagnosis and monitoring still rely on subjective motor assessments and periodic clinical visits, which fail to capture daily symptom variability. This chapter explores the integration of wearable sensors and artificial intelligence in Parkinson's disease management. It outlines digital biomarkers derived from accelerometers, gyroscopes, inertial measurement units, and electromyography, covering both motor and non-motor features. Machine learning models for classification, prediction, and continuous monitoring are reviewed. Clinical applications, along with challenges such as data quality, generalizability, and ethical concerns, are discussed. Emerging approaches, including federated learning and explainable AI, are also highlighted.
