Abstract

Saccharum officinarum (sugarcane) is a perennial tropical crop grown in Malaysia for its raw cane sugar production. Sugarcane bagasse, which is the fibrous part left after the cane juice extraction has an average amount of lignin content (17%–25%) which has previously shown to have anti‐UV properties. The limited valorization of sugarcane bagasse and the ongoing ozone layer depletion have led to the study of lignin extraction and its efficacy in blocking UV radiation. This study aims to optimize organosolv lignin extraction method from sugarcane bagasse for high lignin recovery. The sugarcane bagasse used in the study has been characterized to contain 16.7% lignin and the organosolv lignin extraction method was further optimized using Box‐Behnken design (BBD) to achieve the highest lignin yield. The lignin was extracted under reflux with three manipulated parameters of reaction time (2–6 h), concentration of catalyst (0–0.4 M), and liquid/solid ratio (10/1–50/1 v/w). The lignin extracted from the optimized parameters was characterized for its surface morphology (VPSEM), functional groups (FTIR), thermal stability (TGA) and sun protection properties (SPF). Through this study, it is determined that the best extraction condition yielded 42.95% of lignin when performed at 5.75 h of reflux duration, 0.357 M of catalyst concentration and 27/1 of liquid/solid ratio. Remarkably, when 10% (w/w) of the extracted organosolv lignin is incorporated, the SPF value of a base cream increased by more than seven folds to 104.58 which highlight its potential as a biobased UV filter in sunscreen. This study shows that biomass lignin is highly potential as a UV protection agent which can be incorporated into sunscreens.

Dual response surface methodology-based optimization of biomass blend and densification process for sugarcane bagasse, sawdust and areca leaf plate residues briquettes with improved thermochemical and mechanical properties

Most of the biomass residues from agricultural lands in India are either burned in the atmosphere or take a long time to decompose in the soil. The present work focuses on collecting high-calorific agricultural residues such as sugarcane bagasse (SB), sawdust (SD), and areca leaf plate residues to develop an optimal br...

Efficient separation of lignin from mild alkaline hydrolysate of bagasse by selective adsorbent resin

Amongst industrial lignins, such as alkaline and kraft lignins, lignin from hemicellulose pre-treatment liquor is gaining considerable interest because of its various properties. To explore application potential, a lignin sample that was selectively adsorbed by XAD-16N resin from mild alkaline extracts of sugarcane bag...

Lignin Extraction from Coconut Pith by Alkaline and Organosolv Treatment: Characterization and Optimization of Lignin Yield and Purity

Effective coconut pith lignin (CPL) extraction remained an obstacle since lignin must be removed without causing significant destruction of cellulose fibers. This work seeks to solve these challenges by improving the extraction procedure for CPL to generate a material appropriate for industrial uses, such as anti-corro...

Comparative Assessment of Pretreatment Strategies for Integrated Phenolic Recovery and Bioenergy Production from Sunflower Hulls

Sunflower hulls are an abundant lignocellulosic waste with significant but underexploited potential for the recovery of high-value compounds and production of renewable energy. In this study, an integrated biorefinery approach was developed for the sequential recovery of waxes, free and bound phenolic compounds, and bi...

Physicochemical changes in sugarcane juice during the processing stage using sterilization method

Sugarcane juice has emerged as a popular isotonic beverage choice in Asia. The sugar industry is increasingly looking to shift production lines toward this beverage as a means of product diversification. Unfortunately, the drink has a short shelf life. Thermal sterilization is one method applicable at an industrial s...

Ethanol production from oil palm empty fruit bunch fiber prepared through pretreatment with sodium hydroxide under optimized conditions

Alkali pretreatment of oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) was optimized by varying substrate concentration, alkali loading, temperature, and time. A Central Composite Design (CCD) based on the Box–Wilson factorial design was applied to determine conditions that maximized cellulose and hemi...
