CHALLENGES, INNOVATIONS, AND POLICY PATHWAYS TO RENEWABLE ENERGY INTEGRATION IN NIGERIA’S POWER GRID

Sep 2026 · The Nigerian Journal of Science and Engineering Infrastructure · 0 citations

Abstract

Nigeria’s energy sector stands at a critical juncture, characterized by a widening gap between electricity demand and supply, persistent grid instability, and heavy dependence on fossil fuels. The transition toward renewable energy presents an opportunity to diversify the energy mix, mitigate environmental degradation, and advance sustainable development. This paper examines the key challenges, technological innovations, and policy frameworks shaping renewable energy integration into Nigeria’s national grid. Drawing from interdisciplinary studies, it identifies infrastructural limitations, regulatory bottlenecks, and financing deficits as major barriers, while highlighting emerging opportunities in smart grid technology, Internet of Things (IoT) applications, and bioenergy development. The study argues that optimizing renewable integration requires coordinated policy reform, technological innovation, and strengthened institutional governance. It concludes that a multi-level strategy—combining regulatory coherence, digital transformation, and private-sector investment—is essential to achieving Nigeria’s clean energy transition and aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
