Digital Learning and the Reconfiguration of Teachers’ Professional Roles: A Critical Narrative Review of Pedagogy, Competence, Agency and Artificial Intelligence

Abstract
Digital learning has moved from a supplementary mode of educational delivery to a structural feature of contemporary schooling and higher education. This transition has renewed a recurrent question: whether digital technologies diminish the importance of teachers or redistribute and intensify professional expertise. This critical narrative review examines evidence published from 1 January 2000 to 19 June 2026, while retaining earlier foundational work where necessary, to analyse how teachers’ roles are being reconfigured across technology-enhanced, blended, online and artificial intelligence-mediated learning. Literature was identified through ERIC, OpenAlex, OpenAIRE, CORE, DOAJ and Semantic Scholar, supplemented by citation searching and authoritative institutional sources. The synthesis focuses on five interrelated changes: the movement from content delivery towards pedagogical mediation; the expansion of teacher knowledge from tool proficiency to integrated digital and artificial intelligence competence; the growing importance of learning design, facilitation and classroom orchestration; the emergence of data interpretation, artificial intelligence oversight and ethical stewardship as professional responsibilities; and the interaction of these changes with teacher identity, agency, workload and organisational conditions. Evidence is strongest in showing that educational benefits from technology depend on pedagogy, teacher preparation, purposeful interaction and contextual support rather than on the technology itself. Research on online teaching similarly indicates that teacher presence, communication, assessment and design remain central, although the balance among these functions changes. By contrast, claims that artificial intelligence will substitute for teachers are weakly supported: current evidence is dominated by conceptual work, early-stage adoption studies, competency instruments and short-term interventions. Digitalisation can augment professional judgement when teachers retain decision authority and receive time, training and institutional support, but it can also intensify work, narrow judgement through datafication and reproduce inequalities. The review argues that contemporary teacher professionalism is best understood as technologically mediated human judgement rather than technological replacement. Research priorities include performance-based competence measures, longitudinal studies of role change, causal evaluations of professional learning, cross-cultural evidence and governance models that preserve pedagogical agency while enabling responsible human–artificial intelligence collaboration.
The integration of technology into science education has become increasingly vital in addressing the challenges of teaching abstract concepts in Grade 10 Biology, particularly within rural contexts where resources and cultural assets shape learning experiences. The main objective of this study is to synthesize literature on six interrelated hypotheses: the role of teachers’ Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK), the influence of Situated Learning Theory on student engagement, the moderating effect of Funds of Knowledge (FoK), the strengthening impact of Collaborative Professional Development (CPD), the mediating role of student digital literacy, and the reinforcing function of institutional support and policy frameworks in sustaining technology integration. Employing a narrative literature review methodology, peer reviewed articles, books, and indexed conference proceedings from 1991 to 2025 were analyzed thematically to identify convergences, divergences, and gaps. Significant results reveal that higher levels of TPACK enable effective integration of digital tools, contextualized practices framed by Situated Learning Theory enhance engagement, FoK ensures cultural relevance, CPD builds teacher capacity, digital literacy mediates achievement gains, and institutional support sustains long term integration. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that effective and sustainable technology integration in rural biology classrooms requires a holistic approach that combines teacher expertise, student capacities, community assets, and systemic supports.
This systematic review synthesises empirical and conceptual evidence on university pedagogical practices that cultivate critical thinking and, through it, student intellectual autonomy in digitally mediated learning environments and identifies gaps concerning long-term transfer, equity, and the assessment of autonomy in AI-saturated contexts.

Digital technologies have altered the material conditions of mathematics teaching, but the extent to which they have transformed pedagogy is more contested than the spread of devices and platforms implies. This critical narrative review examines the methodological transition from board-centred exposition to dynamic, interactive, blended, adaptive and artificial-intelligence-supported mathematics teaching. The review integrates evidence from mathematics education, educational technology and teacher-learning research, with particular attention to what changes in mathematical activity, classroom interaction, feedback, assessment, learning space and teacher decision-making when digital resources are introduced. Evidence was selected through structured searches of accessible scholarly sources, citation chaining and verification of bibliographic metadata and Digital Object Identifiers, with the main search period extending from 2000 to 14 June 2026 and earlier work retained when conceptually necessary. Across meta-analyses and classroom studies, digital technology is associated with generally positive but heterogeneous effects on achievement. Benefits are strongest when technology performs a clear didactical function, such as supporting multiple representations, conjecture testing, problem solving, communication, adaptive feedback or deliberate redistribution of class time. By contrast, hardware or software adoption can leave instructional methodology largely unchanged, as illustrated by interactive whiteboards used primarily as enlarged presentation surfaces. Teacher knowledge, task design, orchestration, professional learning and alignment between technology and mathematical goals repeatedly moderate outcomes. Blended and flipped designs can increase active class time, yet evidence on durability and transfer remains limited. Intelligent tutoring systems and learning analytics extend adaptive and diagnostic possibilities, while generative artificial intelligence adds flexible explanation and content generation alongside material risks of mathematical error, overreliance and assessment ambiguity. The review concludes that the digital transformation of mathematics teaching is best understood as conditional pedagogical reconfiguration rather than technological substitution. Research now needs longer-term, mechanism-focused and equity-sensitive designs that distinguish the contribution of tools from the contribution of the teaching practices built around them.

Purpose: This study aimed to explore ways to expand and enhance the concept of teacher learning, focusing on ‘transformative competencies’ and ‘philosophical orientation’. This is to overcome the ontological crisis faced by school organizations in a diversified knowledge ecosystem, by supplementing the limitations of the existing professional capital model.
Methods: This study utilized a literature review method, examining domestic and international academic data and policy reports related to teacher professionalism, transformative competencies, and philosophical orientation. Based on the literature review, the limitations of existing theories were critically analyzed, and a new paradigm for teacher learning along with structural alternatives was logically explored.
Results: Transformative competencies act as a practical driving force that transfers an individual teacher’s human capital into social capital, which operates as collective intelligence. Furthermore, philosophical orientation provides an ethical compass directed toward the essence of education, going beyond the mere accumulation of experience, thereby elevating decisional capital into practical wisdom. It was found that when these two elements are organically combined, a teacher’s practical power and ethical standards align, resulting in an ecological achievement that restores strong teacher agency and subject-ness.
Conclusion: Teacher learning must be elevated to a macroscopic and strategic administrative task to secure the flexibility and resilience of school organizations, moving beyond individual professional development training. To achieve this, flexible organizational restructuring within individual schools and a shift toward field-supported governance by the educational administrative agencies are essential. Furthermore, institutions must guarantee physical and psychological space for teachers by reducing administrative burdens, allowing them to fully exercise their philosophical orientation and transformative competencies.

This scoping review examines scholarly literature on learning hubs, future schooling models, digital literacy, and networked learning ecosystems to identify emerging directions in contemporary education. Guided by the Arksey and O’Malley framework and reported using the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, the review systematically maps evidence from studies published between 2015 and 2025. Sources were retrieved from Scopus, Web of Science, and ERIC databases to ensure comprehensive interdisciplinary coverage. A total of 547 records were identified, with 450 screened after duplicate removal. Following full-text assessment, 58 studies were included in the final synthesis. Thematic analysis revealed five key themes. Learning hubs are emerging as flexible, learner-centred alternatives to traditional schooling, emphasizing personalization and accessibility. Digital literacy has become a foundational competency encompassing critical thinking, information evaluation, digital citizenship, and AI literacy. Industry and community partnerships increasingly support experiential and work-integrated learning. Networked learning ecosystems are reshaping education through connected and hybrid learning beyond institutional boundaries. Key challenges include the digital divide, policy constraints, teacher readiness, and equity issues. The study proposes a Learning Hub Ecosystem Model integrating government, schools, universities, industry, communities, technology platforms, and learners. The review concludes that the traditional grammar of schooling is being reshaped by digital transformation and ecosystem-based learning, offering pathways toward more flexible, inclusive, and future-ready education systems.

This study provides a comprehensive investigation into the evolving structural matrix connecting the contemporary teacher, systems of teacher education, and the fundamental concept of pedagogic responsibility. Positioned within the dynamic structural changes of twenty-first-century education most notably defined by India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the global expansion of artificial intelligence—the research examines how teacher identity, professional ethics, and classroom practice are being fundamentally reconfigured. Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach that integrates historical policy analysis, theoretical tracking of cognitive models, and socio-philosophical critiques, this paper outlines how teacher education frameworks must transition from mechanical, instrumental skill-building toward reflective, values-oriented, and human-centered pedagogies. The analysis underscores that pedagogic responsibility is not a static set of rules but a dynamic commitment spanning ethical, academic, social, inclusive, and emotional dimensions. Ultimately, this study offers actionable systemic strategies for curriculum reform, continuous professional development, and the ethical integration of digital tools, ensuring that educators remain equipped to foster equitable, democratic, and deeply humanized learning ecologies.
