TL;DR

AF in this population was predominantly associated with rheumatic valvular heart disease and structural cardiac abnormalities, particularly left atrial enlargement, particularly left atrial enlargement.

Abstract

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia and is associated with increased morbidity, mortality, heart failure, thromboembolism, and reduced quality of life. The etiological spectrum of AF varies across populations, with rheumatic heart disease (RHD) remaining an important cause in developing countries. Echocardiography is essential for evaluating structural cardiac abnormalities in AF. Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional observational study was conducted among 100 patients with AF admitted to a tertiary care teaching hospital. Clinical history, physical examination, electrocardiography, laboratory investigations, and transthoracic echocardiography were performed. Clinical characteristics, etiologies, echocardiographic findings, and complications were analyzed. Results: Most patients were elderly, with a female predominance. Dyspnea and palpitations were the most common presenting symptoms. RHD was the leading cause of AF, followed by hypertensive and ischemic heart disease. Mitral stenosis was the most frequent valvular lesion. Left atrial enlargement was the predominant echocardiographic finding, while varying degrees of left ventricular systolic dysfunction were also observed. Heart failure and stroke were the major complications. Valvular AF was more common than non-valvular AF. Conclusions: AF in this population was predominantly associated with rheumatic valvular heart disease and structural cardiac abnormalities, particularly left atrial enlargement. Early clinical and echocardiographic evaluation is essential for identifying underlying causes, stratifying risk, and preventing complications such as heart failure and thromboembolism.

Clinical and Epidemiological Profile of Atrial Fibrillation in a High-Altitude Tertiary-Care Setting

The study does not establish an altitude-related AF phenotype, the appropriateness of chronic anticoagulation, or prognostic factors for mortality, and Prospective multicentre studies with adjudicated AF, individual altitude exposure, oxygenation and haematologic measures, and longitudinal treatment data are warranted.

Clinical Characteristics and Hospital Case Distribution of Atrial Fibrillation at the National Cardiac Center, Benghazi, Libya: A Retrospective Study

Descriptive baseline data on AF from a Libyan tertiary center is provided; findings should not be interpreted as population prevalence or as evidence of causal risk factors given the retrospective, single-center, uncontrolled design.

Treatment Patterns and Clinical Outcomes among Patients with Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation

Background: Atrial fibrillation is the most common cardiac arrhythmia and increases the risk of stroke, heart failure, and mortality. NVAF accounts for most AF cases, with treatment focused on anticoagulation and rate or rhythm control. DOAC use has increased globally, but evidence from Bangladesh remains limited. This...

Evaluation of selected fibrosis markers and echocardiography parameters in patients with atrial fibrillation treating cryoablation - perspectives of clinical use.

PURPOSE Atrial fibrillation is one of the most common arrhythmias, affecting 1-2% of the population worldwide. Pulmonary vein isolation by cryoballoon ablation is an established treatment strategy; however, arrhythmia recurrence remains a challenge. The aim of this study was to evaluate fibrosis-related biomarkers and...

Prevalence and factors associated with atrial fibrillation among adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, Western Uganda: a cross-sectional study

Hypertension, HIV infection, obesity, and poor glycemic control were significant associated factors and integrating ECG screening into diabetes care, particularly for high-risk patients may improve early detection and management in resource-limited settings.
