It is found that CSLF6, a cellulose synthase-like F, is involved in cellulose synthesis and Cd accumulation, and influenced Cd tolerance and accumulation by modulating cellulose content.
Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) pollution severely limits rice growth and yield. The plant cell wall acts as the first barrier against Cd, but how cell wall biosynthesis affects Cd accumulation is unclear. This study found that CSLF6, a cellulose synthase-like F, is involved in cellulose synthesis and Cd accumulation. Cd treatment strongly induced CSLF6 expression in roots. Under Cd stress, cell wall thickness and cellulose content were increased by CSLF6 overexpression and decreased when CSLF6 was mutated. CSLF6 overexpression enhanced Cd tolerance, with higher Cd accumulation in roots and shoots. In contrast, mutated CSLF6 decreased Cd resistance and accumulation, and Cd was 27.22–28.59% lower in grains compared to the wild type. Moreover, CSLF6 overexpression regulated the expression of genes related to Cd uptake and cell wall biosynthesis. These results indicated that CSLF6 influenced Cd tolerance and accumulation by modulating cellulose content, providing a useful reference for the genetic improvement of low-Cd rice.
Iron (Fe) deficiency and cadmium (Cd) contamination often co-occur in agricultural systems, yet the way in which Fe deficiency modulates Cd translocation remains unclear. Here, we investigated root cell wall modifications mediating Cd accumulation in two peanut cultivars with contrasting Fe deficiency tolerance. Fe def...
To investigate the mitigating role and underlying mechanisms of exogenous boron (B) in cadmium (Cd)-stressed woody fruit trees, a hydroponic study was conducted using Malus hupehensis Rehd. seedlings treated with different B concentrations (0, 12.5, 50, and 150 μM H3BO3). Cd stress significantly inhibited plant growth...
The conclusion that microbial extracellular products play a major role in regulating Cd translocation in rice is supported, providing a mechanistic basis for developing secretion-based strategies to mitigate Cd accumulation in rice.

Reducing cadmium (Cd) accumulation in plants by disrupting transporter genes involved in Cd uptake or transport often compromises normal plant growth due to the co‑transport of essential elements. Therefore, identifying genes that specifically reduce Cd accumulation without impairing micronutrient uptake remains challe...

Cadmium (Cd) accumulation in rice poses a serious threat to food safety and human health. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying Cd uptake, enrichment and translocation across different rice varieties remain unclear. Here, we identified R66 and R41 as high- and low-Cd-accumulating cultivars, respectively, through...
