Abstract

Background

Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) is a neurodegenerative syndrome characterized by progressive language impairment, with semantic deficits as a core feature, particularly in the semantic variant. However, culturally appropriate tools for assessing semantic associations remain limited in the Indonesian context. This study aimed to develop and psychometrically validate the Indonesian Neurocognitive Semantic Association Test for Neurodegenerative Impairment (INSANI).

Methods

INSANI was developed using culturally adapted semantic association tasks across three domains: class membership, part-whole, and contiguity. Content validity was evaluated by expert neurologists and language specialists using the content validity index (CVI). A field study was conducted in 300 healthy Indonesian-speaking adults. Construct validity was assessed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA).

Results

Of the initial 38 items, 33 were retained after content validation. CFA supported a refined 7-item model with good construct validity while maintaining representation across semantic domains. The final instrument demonstrated moderate internal consistency and high comprehensibility, indicating good psychometric performance and cultural appropriateness.

Conclusion

INSANI is a promising tool for assessing semantic associations in Indonesian-speaking populations, with potential clinical utility in diagnosing and monitoring PPA and related neurodegenerative disorders. Further validation in clinical populations is needed to establish its diagnostic performance.

The semantic association Test of Quebec (TASQ): a novel measure of semantic associative processing with normative data and preliminary clinical validation.

The Semantic Association Test of Quebec (TASQ) was developed as a clinically practical measure of semantic associative processing within semantic memory. This study aimed to establish normative data and provide preliminary evidence of clinical validity in Quebec French-speaking middle-aged and older adults. The TASQ comprises 64 semantic association items assessing abstract concepts, natural concepts, manmade concepts, and famous people. Following pilot testing, normative data were collected from 255 cognitively healthy French-speaking adults aged 50-92 years. Exploratory clinical validation was also conducted in healthy controls (n = 24), individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment (n = 12), and individuals with Alzheimer's disease (n = 12). Pilot testing confirmed the feasibility and clarity of the task. TASQ total score performance was significantly associated with age and education. Regression-based normative correction was retained for the total score, whereas percentile distributions were generated for the total score and semantic subscales. Participants with Alzheimer's disease performed significantly more poorly than healthy controls across all TASQ measures. TASQ total score was strongly associated with global cognitive functioning. The TASQ appears to be a time-efficient and clinically practical measure of semantic processing, supported by normative data and preliminary evidence of clinical validity in aging and neurodegenerative disease.

Validation and normative data for the Multilingual Naming Test (MINT) in French-speaking Quebec adults over 40.

Picture naming tests are critical tools for assessing language and semantic memory deficits in dementia, but must be adapted to local cultural context. This study aimed to develop and validate a Quebec French version of the Multilingual Naming Test (MINT), including determining norms and assessing diagnostic accuracy of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia. Quebec French-speaking participants (n = 224) were drawn from the TRIAD Montreal cohort and the DEVOCS study and stratified into three subgroups using a double-threshold of quantitative (Montreal Cognitive Assessment) and qualitative (consensus diagnosis) assessments. Linear models were used to create norms and compare diagnostic groups; correspondence with the Boston Naming Test (BNT) used the equipercentile method. Item-specific analysis revealed that naming of three items was sex-dependent. We found significant effects of sex and education, and an interaction trend, on uncued MINT scores. The MINT showed high comparability to the BNT, and Receiver Operating Characteristic curves corroborated their similar diagnostic ability. The MINT performed better at discriminating dementia from cognitively unimpaired participants than at identifying MCI. Correcting for education and sex was necessary to obtain accurate scores. Our results show that the MINT is adequately valid and effective to replace the BNT in neuropsychological assessment in the Quebec French population.

Development of the Mandarin Version of the Hearing and Functioning in Everyday Life Questionnaire.

PURPOSE This study aimed to translate, culturally adapt, and preliminarily evaluate the Mandarin version of the Hearing and Functioning in Everyday Life Questionnaire (HFEQ-Mandarin) for older adults with hearing loss. METHOD The study involved a systematic translation and cultural adaptation process following international guidelines, including forward and back translation, expert committee review, and field testing with 15 participants. A total of 227 older adults completed the HFEQ-Mandarin. In the non-hearing aid subgroup (n = 109), participants additionally completed the Chinese Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly-Screening and Mini Montreal Cognitive Assessment. Psychometric analyses included exploratory factor analysis, internal consistency reliability, and correlation assessments. RESULTS The HFEQ-Mandarin demonstrated good cultural relevance after expert review and participant feedback. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a five-factor structure explaining 74.14% of variance. Internal consistency was excellent for the total scale (α = .905), though some subscales showed lower reliability. Correlation analyses indicated significant relationships between HFEQ scores, hearing thresholds, and self-reported hearing difficulties. Participants generally found the questionnaire understandable, though some items, particularly those related to societal support and individual resources, required refinement. The length of the questionnaire posed challenges for older adults, highlighting the need for a shorter version. CONCLUSIONS The HFEQ-Mandarin is a promising tool for assessing daily hearing-related functioning in Mandarin-speaking adults. Further validation with diverse samples is needed.
