Abstract
The interfacial transition zone (ITZ) is inherently a porous region that significantly influences macroscopic mechanical and fracture behaviors of concrete materials. In this study, an extended state-based intermediately homogenized peridynamic model (IH-PD) is proposed for concrete failure analysis considering the ITZ porosity. First, a PD mesoscopic model consisting of mortar and aggregates is established for concrete materials, and the ITZ is implicitly defined by the material interface bonds. An intermediately-homogenized PD model is implemented within the ordinary state-based PD framework, and applied to quantitatively characterize the interfacial porosity. Then, three numerical examples, that is, the wave propagation of a porous glass plate, double cantilever beam test with interfacial porosity, and failure analysis of concrete under uniaxial tension, are investigated for the presented model verification and application. The results indicate that increasing of ITZ porosity leads to a significant reduction in both the responding modulus and critical load. And the cracks primarily propagate along the highly porous ITZ, confirming its role as the weakest link in the mesostructure.
This study presents a reformulated Gurson-type peridynamic model for the numerical simulation of ductile fracture in high-strength metallic materials. The approach is built within a non-ordinary state-based peridynamics framework and tightly couples the Gurson–Tvergaard–Needleman (GTN) model at the bond level. Specific...

Rebar corrosion is one of the primary causes of deterioration and reduction in the resistance of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Previous studies employing phase field modeling for corrosion‐related problems commonly idealize concrete as a brittle, homogeneous material and unconfined structures. Moreover, the ph...

The size effect, defined as the reduction in nominal structural strength with increasing size, is a critical phenomenon in concrete and other quasi-brittle materials, governed by fracture processes such as crack initiation, propagation, and localization within the fracture process zone (FPZ). As the structural size inc...

Cemented sand and gravel (CSG), widely used in dams and cofferdams, is susceptible to fracture under coupled seepage and mechanical loading. This study combines wedge-splitting experiments and mesoscale numerical simulations to investigate the hydro-mechanical fracture behavior of CSG under crack-face water pressures o...
Accurate prediction of ductile fracture in steels requires a mechanistic understanding of the evolution of microstructural voids under multiaxial loading. This work presents a mesoscale finite element framework implemented in Abaqus to characterise fracture initiation in structural steel using a representative volume e...
