Abstract

Increasing soil salinization and water scarcity threaten crop productivity in arid and semi-arid regions. The present study evaluated the physiological and biochemical responses of pumpkin seed (Cucurbita pepo L.) to different salinity and deficit irrigation treatments under greenhouse conditions. Plants were subjected to five irrigation water salinity (S) levels (S1:0.3, S2:2.5, S3:5, S4:7.5 and S5:10 dS m⁻¹) and three irrigation (I) regimes (I100, I75, and I50). Salinity and water deficit significantly reduced evapotranspiration, plant growth, leaf area, and photosynthetic pigment contents. The highest salinity treatment reduced plant height, fresh weight, and total chlorophyll by 57%, 85%, and 69%, respectively. Conversely, oxidative stress indicators, including Malondialdehit (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), increased significantly with increasing stress severity. Enhanced proline accumulation and elevated superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxide (POD), catalase (CAT) activities reflected the activation of osmotic and antioxidant defense mechanisms. The greatest oxidative damage and antioxidant responses were observed under the combined S5I50 treatment, indicating a synergistic effect of salinity and drought stress. Overall, the results suggest that pumpkin plants respond to combined salinity and water deficit through coordinated physiological and biochemical adjustments; however, these mechanisms are insufficient to fully prevent growth suppression under severe stress conditions. These findings provide valuable insights for irrigation management and salinity mitigation strategies in pumpkin cultivation under water-limited environments.

Interactive Effects of Different Foliar Potassium Sources on Growth, Physiology, and Phytochemical Quality of Eruca sativa L. Plants Grown Under Saline Conditions

Due to the lack of irrigation water in hot, arid regions, saline water has been suggested to largely meet the water needs of crops, especially leafy vegetables. Rocket (Eruca sativa L.) plants were grown in hydroponics under two salinity treatments (0 and 75 mM NaCl) supplemented with the nutrient solution. The allevia...

Genotype performance, biochemical and anatomical response of two mango rootstocks to glycine betaine and algae extract under salinity stress

Salinity is a major abiotic constraint limiting mango (Mangifera indica L.) production, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. This study evaluated the effects of foliar application of glycine betaine (GB) and algae extract (AE) on the growth, physiological, biochemical, and anatomical responses of two mango roots...

Water and salt stress on gas exchange, chlorophyll and growth of sesame in brazilian semi-arid

ABSTRACT Semi-arid regions face problems such as water deficit and salt accumulation in the soil, which compromise the physiological performance and growth of crops. This study evaluated the effects of salinity and water deficit on gas exchange, chlorophyll, and growth in sesame. The experiment was conducted at the Pir...

Multilevel Analysis of Glutathione-Induced Responses in Pepper Seedlings Under Water-Deficit Conditions

Drought stress is a major abiotic factor that negatively affects plant growth, physiological processes, and yield in pepper cultivation. This study evaluated the ameliorative effects of exogenous glutathione (GSH) at 50 µM and 100 µM in pepper seedlings grown under water-restricted conditions (60% field capacity), usin...
