Assortment Optimization for the Multinomial Logit Model with Repeated Customer Interactions

Abstract

This paper presents the multinomial logit model with repeated customer interactions. In each period, the same customer selects a product from the recommended assortment or opts out. From the seller’s perspective, the choice probability in the current period is updated based on the purchase history of the customer. We derive this conditional choice probability and study the adaptive assortment recommendation strategy. Although the problem is generally intractable, we discover the structures of the optimal assortment when the customer interacts with the seller for two periods and the available products to recommend are identical in the two periods. For a general number of periods, we find that the optimal fixed assortments that are not adapted to the purchase history can achieve 50% of the optimal expected revenue, and the approximation ratio increases to 68.47% when the available products across periods are disjoint. Using real-world data sets, we demonstrate that the model with repeated customer interactions can better predict the purchase behavior and generate higher revenues. Assortment Optimization in the Presence of Context Effects

Problem definition. We study choice modeling and assortment optimization under context effects, where an item’s perceived attractiveness depends on the other items displayed alongside it. Methodology. We study the Contextual Multinomial Logit (CMNL) model, in which each item’s utility adjusts linearly with the presence...

AI-Mediation in Retail Markets: Revenue Effects and Assortment Optimization

AI shopping assistants increasingly influence which products consumers consider. We study retail assortment planning under AI mediation, where a retailer chooses a catalog, an AI intermediary forms a customer-facing shortlist, and the customer chooses from that shortlist according to a multinomial logit model. We consi...

Cardinality-Constrained Randomized Assortments with Balanced Market Share

Assortment optimization asks a seller which of $n$ products to display to each customer. Under the multinomial-logit (MNL) model, a revenue-maximizing policy may concentrate most purchases on only a few products. Balanced market share (BMS) limits this disparity by requiring every product to receive either zero aggrega...

Marrying Pricing and Advertising with LLMs

We study a sequential pricing problem in which a seller jointly posts a price and an advertisement generated by a large language model (LLM). The seller aims to maximize revenue under an unknown product demand that depends on both decisions, while observing only whether each offer leads to a purchase. We propose an onl...

Flexible Demand Estimation with Search Data

We propose a model of consideration and choice that uses search data to flexibly estimate co-search patterns for every pair of products. Using simulations, we show that estimating co-search flexibly rather than modeling the drivers of consideration comes at a modest cost in precision but guards against misspecification...
